  • FCP keeps crashing whilst exporting and rendering!

Final Cut Studio 2, MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz GB Ram

I’ve had many problems with this project.

I have made a 17min video (An Induction Video for a firm of solicitors) The video is made up of footage captured in FCP (I’m working with DV PAL) and motion files imported to the time line.

Now I exported it as a quicktime (H.264) and the quality was just fine, now when it came to exporting it as a MPEG2 I had numerous problems. It kept crashing whilst exporting.

So I trashed my prefs, deleted my render files and re rendered. I copied it into a new sequence (actually into two sequences) and then it seemed to work but some of the quality of the Motion files was really poor. So in the sequence settings set render to high precision and motion rendering to best.

Now when I try to render the sequence it either says its gonna take anything from 2 hours to 2 days and usually crashes whilst rendering.

Even when I try to render little 7 second sections it says it will take hours.

Now we have just acquired a Mac Pro 3.2GHz with a Terabyte Lacie RAID. Is it easy to transfer the project over?

    Help please!

P.S. Could it be because my media files are on a USB 2.0 Hard drive?

    Thanks

    Hi Soupy Tom,
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use USB. Even while editing DV footage. The problem of the USB is that can not keeps a constant transfer rate. So change your footage to any other HD and try again.
BTW to set High precision rendering in a DV sequence is a waist of time. That works if you change the sequence codec (ie. 8/10b Unc)

Bullox! This is not the source of your problem. If you were laying the footage back out to tape and were getting dropped frames, then yeah, you’d have to look at how you have your drives connected. But for exporting it really doesn’t matter.

Here’s the quickest solution for you – open the sequence, choose File > Export > QuickTime Movie. Not “QuickTime Conversion”, and not “Using Compressor”, use “Quicktime Movie” and then make sure that “Make Movie Self-Contained” is checked on the export dialog box. Do NOT check the “Recompress All Frames” as you’ll be waiting well past when Christ’s return.

Save the file somewhere you’ll easily find it. Desktop is where I do this stuff. But I’m a rebel.

Anyway, after it’s exported, check it, make sure it plays, blah blah blah. Then open Compressor and drag the movie in and choose some exports and destinations appropriate for your goals.

And why do I use a QuickTime movie instead of creating a new sequence, setting it’s format, and reworking all the bits and pieces of the timeline so that it all fits the way I intend? Because, when going from NTSC to H.264, pieces brought in from Photoshop and Motion and LiveType and After Effects can all have color changes, effects issues (like glows not appearing anymore) and it’s a mess. Compressor is really quite good, and because it’s reducing rendered frames, the colors won’t shift, glows can’t disappear, etc.

So, that’s my 2¢. Hope it helps!

    kev~!

Yes, that exactly what you have to do. Put all your footage in your USB driver and let the Terabyte Lacie RAID for the pictures of the grandmother.
I go right now to change my eSATA HDs for some USBs (state of the art storing for Mac).
