  • FCP keeps crashing when exporting for Soundtrack

Posted by Sue Lawson on May 18, 2008 at 4:14 am

    Hello all.

AARGH!!! Working on a feature-length project (approx 1 hr 45 minutes in length)… exporting individual scenes — both audio and video (3-4 minutes in length) for Soundtrack.

FCP crashes every 3rd or 4th time that I export a scene (that is to say every 3rd or 4th scene that I export).

Entire project (single layer of video and 8-12 layers of audio) is fully rendered out… all project media and render files are stored on an external drive (OWC Mercury Elite Pro with 30-45% available ).

Fortunately, this is the only time that FCP crashes… but it is severely impacting my productivity!

No other problems with either Soundtrack Pro or FCP.

Any ideas why this keeps happening and how to prevent?

BTW: I’m currently running a Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 2.5 GB DDR SDRAM GFX: ATI Radeon 9650 Mac OS 10.4.11 Final Cut Studio 2 FCP 6.0.3, Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2, Compressor 3.0.3, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Oh yes… sequence settings are:
    720 x 480
    29.97
    DV/DVCPRO – NTSC
    48 KHz
    32-bit floating point

and FYI: after crashing, if I try to export the same scene from the same (main, full project) sequence, it does not crash again on the same scene… however, it will crash on subsequent exports of other scenes.

    Thanks again for any help.

    Sue,

I’ll admit I’m reaching just a little herem, trying these things can’t hurt.

Run Disk Warrior on all drives if you have it. If not, then run Fix Permisssions in Apple Disk Utility. And, last but not least, trash your prefs. Those just might do the job for you if you’re lucky, cuz it certainly doesn’t sound like you have any serious issues, and all of above often fix many minor issues.

    Good luck…

    Thanks, David!

Don’t know why I’m always so hesitant to run Disk Warrior… after all, that’s why I have it!

I’ll give it a try… after all, it sure beats still sitting here at 1 AM b/c I have to keep re-starting FCP every few scenes.

Very strange. It could be the ghost of Tiffany. Try restarting the computer.

Tiffany is a playful sort! Personally, I’d welcome her return… she’s the fun one!

Tried re-starting… no difference. Good thought, though!

That’s a stumper. All you’re doing is exporting Quicktime Movie. Does it crash for both self-contained and reference? I know you said its rendered. Are all your render check marks checked under render?

No I’m not up this late editing. I just got home from a Bar Mitzvah at the Planetarium. I also had one earlier at Independence Grove.

So Steve, a few weeks back when you said something about chopped liver, I asked if you did Bar Mitzvahs, but you never responded. Now the truth comes out.

I started doing Bar Mitzvahs 12 years ago. Got in the market by accident. I’m not your stereotypical event videographer.

Beautiful day for Independence Grove. Wish I could say the same… about not being up this late editing, but you know me. 😉

Yep… all I’m doing is exporting a QT movie. Not self-contained.

I had been exporting using the “for Soundtrack” option… crashed every few scenes
… finally just exported using my standard QT movie settings… no crashes.

Love to know why it was crashing using “for Soundtrack”… guess I should just be happy that standard QT doesn’t seem to have this problem.

    Still working over here…
