FCP JPEG still in sequence acting wierd….
Posted by Carl on July 3, 2007 at 1:09 pmHello,
We are editing an HDV sequence in FCP 5. The 7 min video has an interview with still jpg images on track 2. We are editing with RT set to safe. We are about 3 min into the sequence, and now about half of our jpg images require rendering (red bar) when we drop them in the sequence, where before they were green. I have check the specs on the jpg files and they are identical. Any ideas on how to resolve this?
Thanks,

I was looking for a better answer. Yes, I can render it, but it takes 3-4 min. to render each clip, meaning it is taking all day to edit keyframes, where as on the first part of the sequence we were able in real-time. There has got to be a way to fix this. It is hard to have our client “imagine” what each clip looks like using wireframe.

How much RAM do you have in your computer? Sounds like you might be running the minimum?
Still images are RAM intensive in FCP and the amount of realtime handling of stills is directly related to total RAM available to FCP. Keep in mind, FCP can now make use 4gb of RAM total, however, if other apps are open too, they grab hold of RAM and that RAM then becomes unavailable to FCP.
So, consider installing more RAM or closing other apps if you want that RT green line to extend further down your timeline.

July 3, 2007 at 2:02 pmDavid’s got it right, but even then, you will run out faster than you want.
I imagine it probably has to do with the HDV sequence as well, there’s not much rt in those for graphics, and then when you go to render, it takes a while.

July 3, 2007 at 2:17 pmCould some of your stills be CMYK instead of RGB?
CMYK always makes my FCP timeline go funky…

July 3, 2007 at 2:43 pmHello,
Yes, you were right. My system (G5 dual 2.7 w/ 7gb RAM) had maxed out. I rendered the earlier jpegs and now the new ones drop in ok. There are all RGB. I was not aware you could max out a sequence with multiple RT render files laid down sequentially. I thougt is was only when you wer playing them simultaneously. I wonder why FCP can’t flush its’ RT cache during playback?
Thanks for the help!

July 3, 2007 at 2:45 pmAlso, if you have a bunch of RAM in your computer already, you can up the RAM for stills in the System Settings Preferences > Memory & Cache > Still Cache.

It holds it’s rt effects in RAM, and I don’t know why. It gets flushed when you render.

There are two things that can help. First, make sure your jpegs are optimized properly in Photoshop. Make them 72 dpi at no more than twice your frame size, or less if you’re not zooming much on them. Just open them in Photoshop and make any changes, you may need to re-connect them when you’re done.
Next, in your sequence settings, in the video processing tab, set the motion filtering quality to fastest. That will render faster, although when you’re done, you’ll want to change it back to normal or best and re-render.
