  • FCP issues w/ HDV upres slipping?

Posted by Chase on October 4, 2007 at 5:16 am

We’ll soon be uprezzing our 1080i HDV show and I’ve heard there’s some problems with decks being out of sync or slipped a few seconds on clips being batched.

Anyone have any yays or nays on this?

Footage was shot on sony HVR-V1U and digitized in low res on Sony HVR-M25U HDV and will most likely be recaptured on that same drive via kona 3.

I’ve heard some of the problem is w/ fire wire deck control.

This is true of any footage that you capture via firewire. Firewire doesn’t have the best deck control, so there will always be a little slippage one way or the next. Just compare it to your offline cut…an exported then reimported self contained movie that you layer above your online and turn on and off to check for slippage.

So upon further reading of posts it looks like we need to either use a HVR-1500 for its HD-SDI and 422a deck control, or we need aja’s HD-SDI converter or an HDMI to HD-SDI converter and an ilink to 422a adapter for deck control.

Has anyone out there in Cow land been able to capture HD-SDI using RS-422 from the Sony HVR-1500. All our attempts have failed. Our Kona3 FCP system can capture fine from the HD-SDI, however every shot captures the wrong in/out points. This leads to clips not being able to reconnect in the timeline when doing an online.
It would appear that Sony’s high-end HDV deck and FCP’s RS-422 handling don’t play well together. Has anyone out there gotten it to work? We certainly haven’t in any of our three rooms.

So make sure that you recapture with handles to allow yourself enough footage at either end to slip shots back into place. Run some tests. Maybe break the show into 10 or 20 minute reels to make it less daunting. And leave yourself plenty of time to do your on-line!
