  • FCP Insists on rendering AIF/WAV, loses sync

    Hi All

this may sound silly but it’s driving us insane.

We have FCP 6 and a ProRes 422 HQ 1080p25 timeline. FCP is insisting on rendering any WAV or AIF files that we import, even though they’re 48kHz/16-bit, just like timeline.

We hit the prob when we exported the 15-min soundtrack (single track, stereo) from FCP, for mastering, and re-imported the fixed track.

First FCP insisted on rendering. Then, even though the wave form of the mastered track matched the raw one perfectly, the imported track played a fraction faster (say 24fps vs 25fps) and lost sync towards the end.

Problem manifests itself even if we import the raw file that we exported from FCP.

We’ve never had this issue before, and we need to master. Aaaargh and all of that.

What if you converted the wav to aif before importing it into FCP and using it in your timeline?
And,24vs 25 is not a small difference. Its 10 frames after 10 sec.
A 15 min timeline would be about 36 sec off (in duration) if there was a 24 vs 25 difference.

    aif gives the same problem.

project was kept at 25fps right thru.

I have a similar issue with audio (aif) slowly moving out of sync over time even though the waveforms match. In addition to that the length of the audio-clip differs from what it should be by about 4 frames. (This happens with aif generated by quicktime and by final cut, too.)

I found, that when I change the playback speed of the audio-clip to 99,9 % it has the correct length and stays in sync till the end.

This works so far, but obviously it isn’t very elegant. Any real solutions and/ or explanations greatly appriciated 🙂

I am experiencing this right now and have had to deal with this in the past. I previously found a work around to this in a forum somewhere.
From memory it involved creating a clean project preferably using an Easy Setup. Reimport the AIFF or WAV into this clean project.
Create a new timeline with the correct setup to match your old timeline and paste the contents of the old timeline into the new. Then edit in your problematic audio file and check sync.

Hopefully all will be well but I have just tried this again to solve my current issue and it has not worked.
So it is still a mystery as to why it happens and how to rectify consistently.
If I have success I will post my adjusted method.

I am hoping we will not see this problem in FCP 7 but I am not confident.
