FCP importing anamorphic motion files as 4:3
Posted by Ariane Fisher on April 17, 2009 at 4:53 pmI have a 720×480 anamorphic motion template which I need to place in a 720×480 anamorphic FCP sequence. FCP is automatically distorting the template, when I open it in the viewer (prior to dropping it into the timeline). It looks 4:3.
When I drop it in the timeline, it is squished. The distort value is 33%. Anamorphic is unchecked in the browser. I know how to fix it once it’s already in the sequence, but seeing as I have several hundred of these templates to use, I’d prefer to have FCP open it correctly.
It does the same thing with motion project files, not just the templates.
Anyone know a way to correct this in FCP?

April 17, 2009 at 4:59 pmHow did these get into your browser? Did you capture them? Import them?
Select the clips in the browser, right-click in the anamorphic column and change them all to anamorphic before you edit them into the timeline.
All the best,
Tom

April 17, 2009 at 5:15 pmFor the project files, I imported the files. But for my purposes, I want to use motion templates. I know how to correct it within FCP once it’s in the timeline. But I want to populate the timeline, without having to correct each one. In some projects I’ve had close to 100 of these, so it’s not good for the workflow to have to change it all later.

April 17, 2009 at 5:49 pmYes, although your response makes me smile.
I know that is possible with the project files, but I need to use these files as motion templates and they will be going directly into the timeline. If you look at a motion template in the browser, there is no place to check anamorphic.
Additionally, I will be using hundreds of these, so checking and unchecking things will be bad for my workflow.

April 17, 2009 at 5:54 pmOk, so that being the case, if I want SD footage in a 16:9 format (pillarboxed) what size do I make the sequence? Should it be some custom size that is not anamorphic, yet still much wider than tall?
I need to standardize all my sequences (whether they are 16:9 footage or not), so that I can use one set of motion templates, which will be 16:9. Should the motion templates then be created in this same custom size?

April 17, 2009 at 6:00 pmThere is no way for FCP to know if 720×480 is anamorphic any other way, unless you capture and check the anamorphic box.

April 17, 2009 at 6:06 pmIf you roundtrip from FCP to Motion the motn proj will conform to your FCP sequence settings. That might make it more painless.

April 17, 2009 at 6:10 pmAre the anamorphic clips being used in Motion first? Is that what you’re doing? Is the anamorphic flag set in Motion for these clips? Is your sequence preset in FCP set to anamorphic?
All the best,
Tom

April 17, 2009 at 6:11 pmIf the material is 4:3 and you want it pillarboxed, place it in an anamorphic sequence.

April 17, 2009 at 6:14 pmI’m creating a brand new project in motion (then saved as a template) with anamorphic settings, then using the exact same settings in the FCP sequence.
In motion it’s 720×480 NTSC DV anamorphic.
In FCP it’s 720×480 NTSC DV, pixel aspect ration CCIR 601, and I checked the Anamorphic box.
