so i’m working with the editing of a High Def wedding in FCP. some of the sequences show a compression of NTSC and others are under the apple intermediate codec.

i could swear that i captured all footage under the apple codec—- its an option under easy setup in the new FCP 6.0 that i’ve been using for the high def.

when i take a finished sequence that has the NTSC compression and take the footage and drop it into a sequence with the apple intermediate codec, the image is distorted and “stretched looking…

do you know why this is?

Because it’s been conformed to the format of the sequence that it was edited into. I guess you’re not using FCP6. Select all the clips in the new, correct HD sequence and use remove attributes to reset the Distort and Basic Motion parameters. If any animation was applied to the clips that will have to be redone. Why did you capture in Apple Intermediate Codec BTW?

    All the best,

What format did you shoot? HDV? Capture in HDV natively. DVCPRO HD? Capture in that.

great. what no brainer. i captured the footage a while ago and wonder i their was another snag in capturing that i can’t remember…will go that route next time.

by the way, as a self-taught FCP user i’m not well versed in all the functions and way around. how would i change the sequence attributes?

Change your setup and then make a new sequence. Or go to sequence>settings and change the settings. It won’t change what’s already been done.

i’m contiuning my journeuy here and now dealing with different settings in sequence. i have the frame size set at 1440 x 1880 and the pixel aspect ratio set at 960×720 because that is what seems to fit the fram best. now what do i set the compressor at?

No way to give an answer. You have two completely different settings going on there. Frame size one way, Pixel Aspect another.

Reading through this thread you never answered the basic question Tom asked you. What is the format of the original footage?

You MUST match the format of your original footage to have any success in HD editing and then sending that material to Compressor.

The format the original footage was captured in as apple intermediate codec using the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i 50 setting (according to a friends advice) – the description of that setting in Easy Set up says that:
when working with apple intermediate codec 1080i 50 source material and using firewire for input/output of audio and video with device control set to Sony HDV 1080i50 FireWire

My CAMERA is a sony HVR-A1U set in HD 1080i capture from mini DVD with firewire 400.

i don’t know how my sequence setting were turned to DV/DVCPRO-HD 23.97 fps because all of my footage was as captured in the format as described above

So go to the presets and find the AIC 1080i50 preset. Make a new sequence and then follow the rest of the instructions. Don’t try to make your own if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can’t mix formats and aspect ratios at random.

That would be you as the operator setting that up. FCP doesn’t automatically make a sequence of its own accord to any format. If you properly set up the Easy Setup, then everything else would follow along properly.

Follow Tom’s advice and see if you can get your sequence properly put together.
