    When playing back (after rendering) of even the simplest move–e.g. a picture sliding into position on screen–there is often a visible hesitation, as if the picture had hiccups. When I replay it, sometimes the hiccup appears earlier or later and sometimes it isn’t there at all–the movement is nice and smooth as it should be.

    Is this an FCP problem, or a Mac system problem?

    Here’s my system info:

    Machine Name: Power Mac G5 Quad
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 4
    CPU Speed: 2.5 GHz
    8 GB DDR SDRAM
    OS X is 10.4.10

    And I’m running FCP 5.1.4.

    All suggestions appreciated.

    Your drives are too slow for the media you are working with

    This problem has just recently shown up–all was well before. Could this be an early warning that the hard drive is going bad? Are there other signs to look for?

    Are you viewing on an external video monitor or on the computer monitor?

    this is on the computer monitor. I do not have an external NTSC monitor.

    Well, that’s likely a big part of your problem.

    You cannot judge image quality on the Canvas on the computer monitor.
    It is, by design, presented in lower resolution and limited motion.

    You need to judge quality on an external NTSC video monitor, and that can even be a standard “TV” connected via a camcorder and FireWire to the Mac.
