Is anyone having a problem capturing HDV footage (1080i 60) and having new clip on start/ stop issues? I am on the latest version of FCP 5.1.2 Universal. It dosent seem to matter weather I have the “create new clip on start/stop” box checked or unchecked in clip settings. I get the same result. Final Cut keeps creating new clips every time there is a start stop on the tape. Footage was shot on Sonys HVR-Z1U camera and imported with Sonys HVR-M15U VTR. I have no idea why this is happening, and is creating a logging nightmare. For some reason Final Cut does not let you alter the Capture Preset for HDV… I have no idea why. This problem does not happen when using the same vtr in dv cam its only when its HDV. Anyone have a solution for this?

That is the way HDV works it is because of the long gop

The workaround is to have your shooters rolling for 10 seconds before action and 10 seconds after action completes. That way you have plenty of pre and post roll when batch capturing and will not have a problem.

I had a recent project where 15% of the takes started right at the recording start stops and I was not able to get everything. fortunately those clips were never used, but I learned a good lesson in HDV Shooting etiquette.

Giving your self 10 seconds isnt just good for shooting HDV it is a good habbit to have no matter what format you are shooting. Also let the camera role for 10 seconds after your shot.

I’m capturing 1080i / 50 and Start / Stop detection is working normally here. It works when it’s checked on and doesn’t work when it’s checked off. This was shot with the Sony Z1 camera.

Looks like this is a known issue the more I look into it. I will definitely make sure the shooters are aware of this and roll an extra 10+ seconds on takes. As for this current project looks like ill just have to tough it out. Thanks for the help

    Agreed whole heartedly.

I was surprised the shooter didn’t do that as he’s been doing this for decades.
