FCP HD Scaling issues
Posted by Kevinmcgurn on November 15, 2007 at 8:51 pmSince the release of FCP 6 I’ve noticed that HD video brought into a DV or D1 timeline gets scaled even when I’ve indicated to NEVER AUTO CONFORM the sequence. Graphics that are “oversized” (1200×1200) can be scaled up to 100% and still extra image available outside of the DV/D1 format. Footage from some HD formats does not get the same treatment. DVCPRO HD 960×720 scaled to 100% fills the frame vertically, but 67% should fill it vertically. The image gets softer beyond that scaling too. HDV1080i/60 (1440×1080) does perform as I’d expect, preserving the footage outside of the raster. Has something changed or more importantly what can be done?

November 15, 2007 at 9:32 pm“always scale clips to sequence size” is also off, as well as NEVER Auto Conform sequence.
It’s only doing it to DVC Pro Material, Graphics and other HD formats work appropriately.Other thoughts?

November 15, 2007 at 9:57 pmDVCPro HD does have a non standard aspect ratio, so some correction is going to have to happen.

November 15, 2007 at 11:08 pmTrue but not really relevant.
In the previous version of FCP when DVCPro HD was scaled to 100% in a D1 sequence, I had 234 more pixels vertically ( 720-486). Now in FCP I have 720 filling a 486 space and any enlargement of the image through scale degrades the picture.
Import the same footage into AE and put it in a D1 sequence at 67% scale & I’ve filled the frame. So the resolution is there in the material, but FCP is treating it oddly and diminishing the quality considerably.

November 20, 2007 at 2:26 pmi have the same problem, but worse.
I CANNOT PUT ANY IMAGE IN THE TIMELINE WITHOUT FCP SCALING IT DOWN.
when i scale it back to 100% the picture gets ruined. The size of the image i am using is very high and when i put it in the timeline it gets scaled down at 21 %. I try to scale it up back to 100 % but it gets the quality destroyed..
in the preferences i have UNCHECKED “Auto scale clips to sequence size” but its like it doesn’t work… Also the auto conform sequence is set to “never”..
i just want to pan a gib image in the canvas. Is that too much to ask from a top selling editing software???!?!?!?!?
help me before i go nuts

November 20, 2007 at 4:20 pmHave you guys rendered this footage? It might look bad in rt extreme, but after a render it should look great.

November 21, 2007 at 4:12 amyes I have, I’ve then compared it to the source footage in AE and it’s lacking .

December 16, 2007 at 3:31 amI am in the same boat as you!!
I thought I was going crazy. FCP 6.0.2 handles DVCproHD 720P 29.97fps material (I am working with the HVX200’s 30N frame rate) incorrectly in a SD sequence. When I edit a DVCproHD720p clip into a DV25 or DV50 (480i) sequence, the HD clip appears to be about half as large as it is supposed to be when scaled to 100%. All seems well with the same clip when edited into a native dvcproHD sequence. I also have tried putting footage into AE and have gotten the same results.
FCP also does an absolutly hideous job of downrezing and interlacing the progressive HD footage. I use Re:visions Fieldskit plugin to interlace the progressive HD footage, this does a very nice job of interpolating fields. This obviously hasn’t helped with the scaling issue (my sequence is set to render all in high precision and is set to BEST)
I wonder if the scaling issue stems from how FCP is creating the interlacing from the progressive footage. It is conceivable that FCP simply takes the progressive frame, divides it into even and odd lines and then simply takes each set of lines and makes 2 fields thereby effectively reducing the vertical resolution by 1/2. This scenario would also create the staccato judder that I am seeing in my clips. This is just my my theory.
keep me posted if you find the anwser. As for me I will let FCP do the scaling during the offline, and I will use AE to make the finished clip for the online.
