FCP HD encode for YouTube/Vimeo/Web
I am a just above novice editor on FCP 7. I have been having problems on how to encode for YouTube/Vimeo/Web with HD projects. I have used all sorts of encodes via FCP, MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, Quicktime, VLC, etc. My question is how do I create great looking small file size videos. I see that 43 min. MSNBC podcasts are around 250MB and they look great. How do I achieve this? I encode a 12 min HD video for YouTube and it hangs around a gig. I even do H.264 and still no help. Please help and thank you.

This all begins with the quality of your original video. The better the quality, the better it will look.
A bit rate between 5000 to 6000k is a number to shoot for.
Telestream Episode is a great encoder.
Look into the Matrox Compress HD card for fast h.264 encodes.
