    Hi CC folks…

Perhaps this is old hat – but I’ve recently noticed a number of DVDs which have been cleverly setup to display well on both NTSC 4:3 screens and also on an 16:9 HD screen.

Here’s an image which shows what are the numbers to use to let your image appear as a typical letterbox image on a regular TV screen and also be able to take advantage of an HD display with a ZOOM function that expands the image both vertically and horizontally to cause the center area of a 4:3 stream to fill a 16:9 frame.

If you wanted to convert your project to make use of this approach you could create a PNG mask with a transparent hole in the center and drop it in as the topmost layer in your project. Then adjust your existing footage by size and location to fit into the exposed viewing area.

The black areas at the sides of the frame are pretty much eaten up by the overscan on most standard TVs, so it’s hardly noticeable there but when you hit the ZOOM button on your HD-TV the image then evenly fills the entire screen.

Mebbe this is nothing new – but I was happy with the results I got and wanted to share the particulars were anyone else so inclined.
