FCP for HDV
I’ve been using FCP in the SD mode for awhile now. and am looking to make the jump to HDV.
Shot some stuff recently on an HDV camera @ 720p30.
What changes do have to make in FCP (ie, Log and Capture/Sequence Setting/Device Control)?
I hope to run a cable from the HDV firewire out into my Mac Pro (which does have an HDMI
connector as well). Is that the right way to go? Will FCP recognize the camera input?
And for viewing purposes, I do have an HD screen with an HDMI connector. Can I go directly
from the Mac Pro’s HDMI to the screen, bypassing a deck for viewing purposes.
In SD, I currently run through a DSR-11.
Answers to these would be very helpful, and if there’s a book you know of that might
address these issues in full, I appreciate knowing.

Firewire is what to use for capturing.
The best way to set up for hdv is go into your final cut pro menu and select “easy setup” then have it set for hdv 30p720.
the Log and capture process should be the same as you are accustomed to.
I’m not sure about using the camera as a deck, I know you can do it with DV cameras but I just tried it with a hvrz1u for hdv1080i60 and was unable to get final cut to recognize it as a playback device.
I’ll let you know the process in case it works for you:
After everything is connected and the camera is recognized by final cut go to your “view” menu, hit refresh A/v devices, then make sure Video playback is “All frames” and External video is HDV(1280×720) 30p
