FCP exports still image JPG darker than what’s on screen
Hi, I’m exporting still image JPGs from a sequence using Quicktime conversion and every JPG I export is darker than what’s shown on screen. Does anyone know why this is and how I might export still images that won’t change how they look?

Hard to know what you are comparing. Are you judging the image on the same monitor? FCP doesn’t give an accurate display and until version 7 FCP and Snow Leopard the display gamma was wrong. You may just be seeing this gamma shift which is actually a problem with the way FCP is displaying.
The jpeg may be correct. There aren’t a lot of settings in making a still via QT conversion. depending on how the jpeg is going to be shown, it might be better to export a tiff or png and then use photoshop (or equivalent) to get the grade you want before making a jpeg.

Thanks for the response. Looking at both images on the same monitor, alt-tabbing between the two. FCP is version 7 and Snow Leopard is installed. Do you think I should just make a correction brightening filter and apply that to every image?

Is it brightness or gamma? Do you have any filters on the original before you export?
I would export flat from the timeline and correct to taste in photoshop. You might also need photoshop to deinterlace the stills if your sequence/ footage is interlaced.

I’m grading in Apple Color, sending to Final Cut Pro, then exporting straight from the timeline without altering the image at all in FCP.
I could touch up in Photoshop, that’s definitely an option, but I think I’d rather just make the images extra bright in Color. That might be the simplest option. I’m just curious as to why the image looks brighter in the editor than its exports.

Just curious what codec you are exporting from Color to FCP. Is it ProRes444? If so then having an alpha channel may be affecting the still export.

I’ve left it on Original Format which I think is DV/DVCPRO – NTSC.

I highly recommend outputting ProRes 422 from Color. It is the best time to get out of DV codec as your grade will be rendered in a much better codec – 10 bit and better color space. I didn’t think Color would output DV codec from a round trip grade.
