February 22, 2013 at 12:55 amYou can use Log and Transfer plugin to help you freely to transcode MXF to FCP or directly get MXF to FCP for editing natively.
If your file is not supported by Log and Transfer, you can download a cheap MXF Converter to convert MXF to ProRes and import to FCP 7.

June 11, 2013 at 8:29 pmI have a problem with FCP at home. Working with an archive historical program I discovered that Calibrated Q have an MXF option that does not work for me. My employer is using an MXF plug-in from Cinnamon (?) that is not commecially available. It is impossible for my employer to let me have it on the Mac on my home. I can edit the MXF video files on all the Macs at work, but I’m kind of used to bringing a LaCie disk home and edit there too. Do anyone of you know why the Cinnamon MXF option for FCP is not for sale? My employer for 30 plus years is the NRK (the BBC of Norway). Our entire archive has been transferred to our new programme bank, in reality a server/huge disk (grid) and some monstrous tape streamers. So when I want to use stuff from the archives its always MXF now. This is a real downer for me, and I will appreciate any help. This is what I”m up against with my trusty home iMac and Apple FCP 7.2 (NRK version): https://www.tsl.co.uk/download%5Cnews%5CTVBE%20NRK%20Tale%20of%20the%20tape.pdf

Why doesn’t it work?
MXF4mac also has MXF tools for mac based systems.

January 31, 2014 at 10:59 amHi there, I’m trying to export a .MXF file from FCP 7, with IMX 625 compression. I’ve succeded to do it with the Sony XDCAM plugin without any problem, but I can’t set the fields right.
The timeline is progressive/none fields (that’s what the broadcaster is asking, and the orginal footage is progressive) but the .MXF that creates is always upper fields, no matter what I do.
Any suggestion? I know that if I import the .MXF in FCP I can change the fields settings in the browser, resolving the interlacing problem, but the broadcasters use AVID and they ask specifically for progressive .MXF
Thanks!Michele Stocco

February 3, 2014 at 12:08 amYes they are. Source is 720p, ProRes HQ, down-sized into a PAL IMX 625 timeline, none fields.
The .MXF it creates has the typical interlaced artifacts, but when I import the created file into the FCP, changing the field order directly into the browser, the interlaced artifacts vanishes.
The broadcaster told me that he can’t to do the same with AVID. Can anyone confirm it to me? To me it sounds that he doesn’t know/want to change it.Anyway I have the feeling that the problem could be the compression itself (IMX 625), because even if I’m doing a .MOV I get upper fields. Any suggestion?

720p50 or 25?
My suggestions would be to export a reference movie out of fcp, and make a 625p IMX movie in Compressor.
You have to make sure your input and output fields are progressive in a/v attributes tab and encoder settings.
Also make sure to adjust the aspect ratio to letterbox or FHA (padding or squeeze).
Re import the anamorphic IMX movie, make sure it’s marked progressive in fcp, then export the MXF.

I’ve tried your suggestion, Compressor, setting input and output as progressive… But the exported file is always upper fields… and I have to change the field order on the browser…Michele Stocco

February 3, 2014 at 5:15 pmNo matter what an SD file is going to be played back in an interlaced stream, or more technically, as progressive segmented frames.
If you have insured that your source and output are progressive, then you should be just fine.
Fcp is assuming upper first as PAL SD is usually upper first. If your footage is progressive, then it will still look and feel progressive, it’s just playing back in an interlaced stream (one field at a time).
I just tested your exact output methods, and the footage appears progressive, even though it is listed as interlaced.
