Okay – I need advice please.
I am currently trying to export a 40min project from FCP version 6.0.5 to Compressor 3.0.5 on a Mac G% version 10.4.11 [Processor 2.1GHZ Power PC]
My sequence settings are 1280×720 HDTVp[16×9] in a timebase of 29.97 Compressor QT settings Apple ProRes422[HQ] to HD Best DVD 60mins H.164
The project file contains some HD, HDV and SD footage – hence the Apple ProRes422[HQ] Sequence Setting.
Can anyone advise me as the export has taken 30hours so far with 54 hours to go and climbing????????????

    Is it my Processor?
Is there something I could have done differently?
    Clearly there must be?

I’ve exported SD footage longer than this a gazillion times to Best Quality DVD for example and it’s always been just great. I am confused as to how long this is taking? Can anyone help as I have a deadline for this project and this is simply crazy?

I looked at QMaster settings after researching forums and blogsand set the sharing to 2 instances just in case?!?

I realised it would take a bit longer than standard definition but cannot believe this is normal.
Oh and all my files are in one place running from my 1TB ministack. I’ve always enjoyed the performances of my ministack external hard drives so I don’t think this should be an issue.

I’d be so grateful for some advice.

    many thanks,
    Andria

    Hi Andria,

Its never a good sign if the time to completion is going up. Something is wrong. Cancel the encode. There might be problem with a source file. You’d be better off exporting a self-contained movie and running Compressor as a standalone app if you want the best chance of a successful encode. I’d repair permissions, restart, then run a test with small clip first. If everything is ok try it again.

It’s just too slow – please does anyone have any suggestions?
Is there another way I can export this project?
I want my clients to have the best quality DVD5 possible.
I would really appreciate some help.
I am still searching the forums and have been for days now but I just cannot find a solution that resonates with my problem. I am sorry if I’ve missed something …..

    many thanks,
    Andria

    Thank you so much Joel!
Um I’m sorry but would you be so kind to explain to me exporting a self-contained movie please?
    Again thank you in advance.
    Warm wishes.

    many thanks,
    Andria

Hi Joel – again I’d like to thank you thus far – kinda hoping you might have further advice from this point at all? IE., self-contained movie?
And then some ideal settings to achieve a great HD DVD5 export in Compressor from there at all?
Thank you in advance for your time – or anyone else out there able to help me here please?

    many thanks,
    Andria

I’m far from an expert—but I think what was suggested is to export a Quicktime movie and open that in Compressor. That’s the first option in the export menu.

    Hi Andria,

Sorry for the delay. I didn’t have it set so I got notified of responses.
For a self contained movie your fully rendered/conformed sequence the active window and choose File > Export > QuickTime Movie. In the export window check Make Movie Self-Contained at the bottom. The other settings should be Current Settings, Audio and Video and DVD Studio Pro Markers. Make sure you’ve got plenty of hard drive space at the destination you choose for the file. Once exported open Compressor and drag the file in. For the best output without complicated tweaking choose form the Apple presets as you did before based on the length of your movie Apple > DVD > DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes should look great. Because your computer is slower you could speed up the process if your program is shorter by choosing the Fastest Encode 90 Minutes preset and bumping up the bit rate to no higher than 8Mbps. This is a great tool for checking what your max bit rate should be:

    Joel:

I appreciated your responses to Andria. I have been trying to determine if when exporting to QT from FCP (either a self contatined movie or just a reference file), if the “Current Settings” are always the same. What should those presets be or how does one determine what they should be for any particular movie, original media & final usage? any help would be appreciated. I’m a former commercial photographer & videographer who’s been out of it for about 15 years or so trying to get back into all this with a new enterprise. Thanks in advance. Josh
