FCP EXPORT. Is taking forever. Any ideas why?

Hi Guys n Gals,

I’m just trying export a 20min video from final cut pro and I don’t understand why it’s taking so long.

Hardware Overview: Mac Pro, x2 3Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 8GB RAM – 800mhz DDR2

Export: I’m trying to export the video to the following settings (bare in mind all video has been rendered)

File Type: MOV Codec: H.264 Dimensions 1920×1080
Running Time: 18mins 43secs

It’s currently telling me its going to be 2 hours for the export am I being impatient or is there a way that I can speed things up? also I don’t have any additional software open.. Apart from safari to type this 🙂

Export a QT Movie from FCP. Drop that file into Compressor and choose an h.264 setting.

If you set up a Q-Master Virtual Cluster (System Preferences) you can export a Quicktime out of Final Cut using current settings and compress to H.264 through Compressor. You should be able to cut your time in half using this workflow. Keep your current export going of course, but in the future this workflow could save you time. Google “Compressor Virtual Cluster.”

The difference is Final Cut Pro is not multi-core aware. When you set up a virtual cluster in Q-Master you are able to tap into the 8 cores your machine has available. Also, because Final Cut Pro isn’t multicore aware feel free to use Safari without concerns of slowing down your export.

2 products to look into.

1. Elgato turbo.264 HD

2. Matrox Compress HD card or any MXO 2 with Max.
