• FCP error with 3rd monitor

Posted by Rusty Shackleford on May 11, 2009 at 4:33 pm

we have a mac pro with fcs 2 and 2 samsung dvi monitors.
we added an ATI RADEON HD 3870 card and added a panasonic HD tv to the wall.

but whenever the tv is plugged up to the computer, final cut gives a render fx error.
is there a fix to this? or a way for fcp to not see the 3rd monitor?

Pull out your Nvidia card and connect your 2 Samsung (computer) monitors to the ATI 3870.

Get yourself some type of capture card AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox to view your video on your Panasonic HD TV.

FCP…any of the Final Cut Suite…does not work with two graphics cards. They CAN…but there will be issues, and definately if you use FX Plug plugins in FCP that utilize the graphics card for more RT performance, and Motion that REALLY relies on the card. As does Color.

One graphics card only…and if you need external monitoring then you need a capture card, as Steve mentioned.

[brandon morris] “whats the difference between a graphics card and capture card? “

Graphics cards drive a computer display.

A capture card connects to / from audio video devices such as cameras and vtrs. the capture card allows you to capture from the audio video sources and play back to audio video sources. Some capture cards like the AJA Kona series allow you to convert sources during ingest. Such as from SD to HD, from 720p to 1080i, from HD to SD, from SDI to ProRes / DV / DVCAM / DVCPro HD, etc…

Any capture card that works with HD signals can connect to an HDTV. AJA Kona series, AJA IoHD, Matrox MXO 2 and others.

What’s the most affordable card solution to just use a 3rd monitor with FCP, and not needing to convert?

Would a KVM switcher work somehow?
So instead of having to crawl under the desk to unplug the DVI cable, we could have a button to switch between HDTV and the computer display.
Just to use the HDTV as an extra monitor to show clients and not with FCP.

Would the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro HDMI card work?
I asked a rep in the online Apple Store chat, she had to check with a higher engineer rep, but she said it would. I don’t always trust Apple sales reps bc they often give wrong info at the store.
But with the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro HDMI card can I use the HDTV as a regular 3rd monitor (both editing in FCP and normal apps like QuickTime Player)?

Thanks.

What about a USB KVM?

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/VIDU2DVIA/

Could I plug this in and use the HDTV as a 3rd monitor to use quicktime player and edit in fcp?
