I’m trying to darken a portion of my b-roll footage in FCP to highlight specific words on a page of type that correspond to the voiceover. Can anyone direct me to the proper terminology for this question to find tutorials or info in the FCP manual?
So far I’m searching to no avail. Thanks for the help!! -

Hi Scott,
There are many ways to do this, but I will points you to one that will leads you to discover many interesting things.
Basically you need two layers with two version (one light, one dark) of the same picture and in the middle, a geometric shape (mask ) that determines which area of the light picture is shown on top of the dark one.
Search on the Final Cut tutorials the one (two parts) of Walter Biscardi on “Travel mattes”.

Thanks! This helps. I’m assuming I can create the mask in FCP to the proper size and shape rather than use PhotoShop. Am I correct on that?Cheers!

Hi Scott,
You can use the Shapes (Generators) which you can animate very easily to use as “Travel matte Luma”. In fact there is a “Highlight” generator for this purpose.
You can also use a solid matte (color doesn’t matter) and crop it to be used as “Travel Matte Alpha”.You can also work with only the two pictures layers, and using the effect Masks > Shapes on the top one.
On all those methods is very easy to animate the shape.
Depending of your picture, one or the other may be better, but all of them works in a very similar way.
