FCP Edit to (HDCam) Tape via Kona 3

The Kona Control Panel under Applications > AJA Utilities is used to set outputs, FCP cannot control the card independent of this app.

How is the deck Setup?

sounds as if the Deck inputs are set to something other than HDSDI if you have confirmed that you are getting signal.

I use this combo almost daily FCP w K3 to/from HDW1800D
It’s usually the output of the Kona3 not set to HDSDI which I have to set via the kona control panel
In my case SDI 1 is the output to the machine room patch bay, so I need to make sure it’s set correctly.
It gets changed frequently for down/cross converts

The output of the Kona 3 Application is set to SDI 23.98psf.

that does not mean the deck is setup to accept HD signals when possible it could be configed to do SD.

Is the format correct (in case you have the HDV or 720p conversion boards in)

the output is correct for the signal you are trying to record?

the Kona control panel is set up correctly?

have you tried making sure all of this works without using FCP – just the Kona Control panel.

I have:
…Crash recorded from a signal generator through the Kona Card (without FCP running) to verify it’s not the Kona card. The video is there.
…Run the output through a scope to check that the format is indeed correct.
…Eliminated all references to ProRes422 and double checked all settings to be sure all the settings match what is expected.
…Verified solid tri-level sync is getting to both units.
…And, like I said, the deck, the Kona and FCP all think they are making a recording but the screen is black.

I suspect I’m missing a setting in FCP telling it to output HDSDI video with embedded audio. I’ve been through every menu I can find.

The systeme frequency of the HDWD1800 is 1080/23.98psf. When FCP is making the recording (of black) the SDI icons continue to blink.

It is NOT in FCP.

Go to Applications > AJA KONA Control panel.

Which screen is black- it should be on your computer monitor but not on the deck’s v-out monitor

Yes, the deck is set correctly to record 1080 23.98psf content. It is the deck’s screen that is black.

In the AJA control panel, I find no option for Embedded Audio. The only option is SDI 23.98psf for output.

I believe that the small LCD panels on the deck will NOT display a 23.98 picture. Someone can
correct me if I’m wrong, but on our HDCAMsr’s that’s the case.

So, do you have a monitor connected to the deck that CAN display 23.98 images (Like a plasma screen?).

obviously something is amiss here, since that to me means the deck is not getting any signal at all.

are you sure that content you are outputting is 1080 23.98 psf.
you are sure your deck is set to record 1080 23.98 psf.

you have checked the actual setup and are not assuming that everything is OK.
you have played out to a monitor over the SAME cable you are trying to lay to the deck with.

are you able to lay bars and tone via the Kona Control Panel outside of FCP?

are you positive that FCP is set up correctly? is the project fully rendered and playout is capable of displaying your content correctly?

the setting you are looking for is in the Kona control Panel under the “inputs” tab “Audio Input” set this to embedded. This is input. all outputs are active all the time thus embedded audio is always output.

Under the “control” tab of the KONA control Panel set “DEFAULT VIDEO OUTPUT to “Test Pattern” and in the test pattern drop down select “Color Bars” click on the frame buffer and select 1080sf 23.98, set genlock to freerun
Does your deck see this signal?
If not you have either a setup issue with the deck or a cabling issue if it does
set genlock to ref now and verify you have 23.98 showing in the ref in

(If Not You need to check your sync connections. are you feeding tri level to the deck and the Kona. what does the kona see for “ref” (locking to house black works for 59.94 formats but not 23.98 Psf.) also verify you are Psf and not P.)
The deck will show a picture in the lcd display at 23.98Psf

check your output in the kona control panel and make sure it is what you intend. you’ll need to drag it off to the side where it’s not covered up when FCP is the active window to see what the KONA is doing.
If your FCP easy setup and the KONA control panel agree on your output and that output matches your input setting on the Deck try playing your sequence while patched to the deck with no tape in it and see if you see picture in the lcd screen. If that brings joy
try edit to tape
It does work I have the same deck and KONA
