FCP-DVI->HDMI External TV Monitor – A Pratical Solution?
Dear Creative Cow Users,
I would like to provide you with some background information before I post my question.I am a HDV editor, utilizing Final Cut Pro on one LCD monitor. I live in a studio apartment, where my plasma TV (720p 1280×768 resolution) is in close proximity to my Mac Pro.
Am I able to utilize my second DVI port on my Mac Pro and connect a DVI->HDMI cable to my plasma TV, to use as my Final Cut external viewing monitor with an accurate real-time picture?
I am trying to get a grip on the pros and cons of doing so, or would be purchasing a capture card, and purchasing a HD monitor, be the only way? My work also entails color correction.I appreciate your time and help.

To view HDV on an external monitor you are going to need to purchase a capture card, like the ones Blackmagic or AJA offer. They will both play out HDV in real time. The catch is that you cannot view this on a regular TV or NTSC monitor. Since this is HD, an HD monitor will be needed. -

Computer monitors and video monitors are not the same, and neither are computer display cards and video I/O cards such as BM and Kona cards.
To properly display and color correct video you cannot use a computer card to feed a proper signal to your plasma TV or to an HD broadcast if accurate broadcast color corection is what you want.

You don’t necessarily need to purchase another monitor if you know how to calibrate that one and color grading is not super critical. But if you want to view a real broadcast video signal, you absolutely need a Kona or Decklink or the Matrox thing.
The graphics card on the Mac will only output 4:4:4 RGB, non-interlaced signals using VESA timing formats. The gamma is wrong, the color space is wrong, and Cinema Display Mode in Final Cut doesn’t handle interlacing properly. In other words, it is not going to show your HDV video properly no matter what you do.
I’d consider the Blackmagic Intensity which has a true broadcast 4:2:2 HDMI output. Probably the cheapest solution.

Thank you. I will begin researching broadcast monitors and/or HD TV’s for my color correction and previewing solution. I am sure there will be a mountain of topics already covered on the “Cow”.
