I’m looking at a system using ‘edit in place’ on a Omneon Mediagrid and Final Cut Studio to edit hi res DVCPROHD files. These files are MXF wrapped OP1a.

    Couple of questions:

If the timecode for the clip is contained in the VANC (it being an HD format) then how does FCP access it?

Additionally we will have 16 tracks of audio wrapped up in the MXF wrapper which breaks the format rules for DVCPROHD at the moment. I’m advised that I can use MXF4MAC to get all the audio files out but I’m not sure how that plugin works. Can anyone explain the workflow? Do I have to convert the MXF clip using the MXF4MAC before I can start editing?

While timecode exists in the essence, there’s an XML metadata container that has tc info in it as well. MXF4mac uses this tc as does FCP.

    Here’s a primer:

MXF4mac allows native editing of MXF files in FCP with no conversion or log and transfer. All P2 metadata is maintained and written in to the FCP project as well.

    Thanks – useful video.

After I’ve edited with MXF4MAC how do I rewrap the final file again?

Rewrap to what? MXF or QT?

Rewrap to MXF, with all the timecode info back into the VANC and put the 16 tracks back in.

MXF4mac has developed an MXF exporter from FCP that will do just this. Contact them and they will gladly answer any questions you have:

    Matt,

the timecode is saved in the MXF within a dedicated timecode track. No need to extract VANC information.

16 tracks in MXF is no problem and does not break any specs. This is OP1a, not OP-Atom like P2.

You don’t need to convert or re-wrap the MXF clip with our solutions, you can also access/edit streaming/growing files. We only review the forums from time to time, please get in touch with us through the contact form on our website to discuss your issue in detail. https://mxf4mac.com/contact

    Thanks
