Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn’t find a recent discussion about it with an answer. I am debating between getting final cut pro and final cut express to run on an imac with 2.26 core 2 duo 2 GB of 1067 ddr3 ram with a 256 mb nvidia 9400.

Assuming price is not the issue and I don’t ‘really’ NEED pro (just would prefer if it will work). Will the new final cut studio run well on my machine or would it just be frustrating with only the minimum 2 gb of ram recommended ?? Would I be better off running express in terms of smoothness no crashing waiting excessively… ???

If it will run well I would rather pro. but… will PRO run well to create 5-20 min. videos ? HD vs. non HD an issue at all ??

Thanks very much… High School Media Teacher, multiple Macs (tiger and snow leopard- mac pros, imacs, emacs) and PCs

4 GB memory is recommended. But both will work fine on that configuration.
For ProRes workflows an external fw800 drive would be advisable.
Just realize that final cut express only does DV/HDV/AVCHD formats.

FCE only works with DV and AIC. When you capture HDV it converts it to AIC.

I would recommend FCP simply for the better editing format of ProRes.

Thanks for your quick reply Paul… I need to order software for 30 computers, don’t want to order something that won’t work right… expensive mistake. I’m planning on running express on 25 machines and pro on 5 of them. I have to order soon before the powers that be change their mind about the money but want to make sure it’ll work when it gets here or I’ll be hanged.

The formats for express are fine, sr. high school kids doing projects/ portfolios to apply to post secondary etc… but would like the potential of using pro for certain things.

Just a heads up. FCE leaves a lot to be desired. As long as you have a couple of computers using FCP, you should be fine. FCE doesn’t have much–extremely, and I mean extremely, basic. I have been using FCE @ home and FCP @ work for about 2 years now. I would prefer to do my personal projects at my office so that I could use Pro.
With the future of Video moving towards HD, you might be safer to buy all FCP. Students who can’t afford FCP @ home will definitely love being able to use it at school. Then you can recommend buying FCE for home. With an Education Discount, you are getting more than you are paying for when you purchase the FCP license.
Don’t buy something now, that will be outdated in a year and you’ll have to buy a new version.

    FCE is not upgradable.
