  • FCP Display Gamma Problem (Everything Dark)

Posted by Chris Armstrong on March 1, 2011 at 9:25 pm

I recently let system update do it’s thing and went from 10.6.4 to 10.6.6 including updating pro-apps (FCS 3).

Suddenly FCP, DVDSP, & Motion show all of my video files extremely dark (STP & Color are show them fine).

It’s as if the gamma those programs are using to display the image has changed. (Quicktime & other non-Apple apps show it fine).

I’ve messed with FCS Maintenance Pack, and also used FCS Remover to remove and re-install, but that hasn’t fixed the issue.

I’m sure there is a setting, or corrupted file somewhere that’s causing video to be displayed wrong, but I’m not sure where to look, what to change at this point.

Any help, thoughts, ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. Good color in FCP gives too bright footage in ProRes and DVD Studio Pro.
This makes it impossible to rely on grading in FCP.

I solved my issue by changing my “Display Profile”, under the “Color” tab in the Display Setting.

Somehow my profile had gotten changed and once I reset it all went back to normal.

I cannot find the “Display Profile” anywhere on FCP. I have been having this darkening problem for awhile and I need to get rid of it. If you could explain the path to it that would be great.

Hey Chris, I know once we get things fixed, we jet off and forget to update folks, so here’s a reminder.. could you please let us know how you fixed it?
I’m having the same issue on a DVD that is oh like a year past due, and I’d appreciate your walking us through that, or anyone else for that matter.

I don’t remember updating my release of final cut, but I probably did, or have it set to automatic. I’m on 7.0.3
I had the DVD done and sent off to print, but had to change something… I made my adjustments in motion which save back to FCP 7, I exported as HDV 720 24fps, used compressor to make that Mpeg2 & ac3 files… which seemed to work best previously… well when I view the mpeg2 file alone before dropping it into DVD studio pro, it looks as it should… as soon as it gets into DVD studio pro, it’s dark…

Anybody out there have a solution for this? That’d be a huge blessing, thanks. f

Go to >System Preferences>Displays>Color> Then go through the monitor calibration process or choose and earlier profile.

I am using the Xrite i1 pro display calibration device and software. FCPX and Quicktime appear ‘correct’ and Motion 4 is displaying under a different gamma setting. Darker/Crushed.

As soon as I reverted to the native Mac profiling in System Preferences away from xrite, both FCPX and Motion match. Bright!

Guess I’ll upgrade to Motion 5 and see if that fixes it.
