November 30, 2008 at 1:50 pmHi Ben
I am not sure I follow. If I input the footage at 4×3 from digibeta at the highest quality (pro res, 10bit), letter box to 16×9 and then output for DVD how does this lower the quality twice?
Its a standard DVD release.
Unfortunately, the option to re:grade to HDCAN SR or datascan to DPX is not an option due to financial constraints.
thanks

I completely understand what Ben is saying. When you scale from 4×3 you take a huge resolution hit, and the when you compress to MPEG2 for your DVD you also take a big hit. That is imdeed lowering the quality twice.
Why exactly are you up-rezzing to 1080i nin order to make a SD DVD? That step seems entirely unnecessary.

December 1, 2008 at 4:16 pmYeap. The easiest way is also the one that will give you the best quality.
– Put your 4×3 in a 16×9 sequence.
– Reposition the shots for no cut the heads of nobody as Peter says. Be careful and set always the value of “Y” an even number, so you don’t incurs in interlacing problems.
– Set “Render Motion Effects: BEST”. In fact you are not only cropping, but resizing and changing the pixels aspect.
– Send to Compressor from the time-line.
