I hope anyone can shed some light on this….we are working off a G5 dual 2.5 and we were running FCP V4, but we sent away for the crossgrade upgrade V5.1. After installing the upgrade I tried to open up an existing project that was created in 4 but when I try to open it up and after answering “yes” to “update project file” in 5.1 I just keep geting “Application Unexpectedly Quit”. In order to try and troubleshoot this problem I opened other projects that were created in 4 and answered “yes” to “update project file” and they opened up just fine. So i copied the project file that I was having the problem with to a disc and opened it on a laptop with V5.1 and apart from the media “being offline” (I didn’t connect the drives) it opened up fine. So i go back to the G5 and disconnect the drives and try to open it but no such luck. Any thoughts, ideas, solution? ANYTHING would be GREATLY appreciated!

Are you sure that all of the media was offline when you disconnected the drives?

Are you running FCP 5.1.2 on OS 10.4.8 and QT 7.1.3 on both machines?

Have you done the tried and true All-Purpose First Response to FCP problems, Trash The Preferences?
To do this easily use FCP Rescue 5.
Did you run Software Update (Pro Apps Update) after the crossgrade install and before launching FCP 5 to bring your FCP up to 5.1.2 plus Motion updates and others? This might also help.

There are some plug ins and codecs that do not work with FCP 5.1.2 yet as the architecture has changed somewhat.

    Check this out for details:

make sure all of your plug ins are updated if they have updates. As a test, you can drag all third party plug ins out for now and see if FCP starts for you. There’s something that’s on your G% that’s not on the other machine, what is it? Find it and remove it.

I just downloaded all the current updates (Including FCP 5.1.2) and that fixed the problem! Thanks so much.
