    hi guys:

    desperate for some quick advice

seven external drives going into a G4 dual processor 800mhz. 1.25 gig ram
    fcp 5 hd
    large project file: 100meg

fcp is crashing and extremely sluggish…what are the obvious ways to maximize the application’s performance? I don’t care about poor playback….

    thx in advance!

    one thing to add:

as playhead is going through sequence, when it comes to a new clip it takes several seconds to wakeup the external drive (which has spun down). possibly a networking thing? I have a tangle of two hubs and some daisy chaining amongst the 7 drives.

I would suggest limiting the number of daisy chained drives as much as possible.
If you absolutely need them, consider maybe a bigger drive to hold everything you need.
    What type of drives? LaCie?
    More RAM wouldn’t hurt.

This is a common issue and no need to fret. If not familar with the concepts below…
become familiar with them, they solve MANY problems that FCP encounters.

In the System Preferences>Energy Saver settings, do you have the box to “put disk(s) to sleep when possible” checked?

    If so, try unchecking that.

Also, of you can streamline how many drives you have daisy-chained, that’s good advice, too!
