  • FCP crashing with internal raid?

    Hi, All,

I’m still trying to pinpoint causes of long-term consistent crashing mostly during renders. Indications are that reducing ram to 2 GB helps, and for me taking my Kona card out helps, but I’ve got another question.

I’ve had this problem for 16 months on two machines, a Mac Pro and a G5 Quad. About the only consistent thing between them besides a Kona card and 4GB ram is that I have had an internal raid 0 array in each of them.

So I’m wondering — of those people who are having regular crashes or out of memory errors on rendering, do many or all of you have internal raid arrays? Could it be possible that the software overhead responsible for maintaining those arrays comes into occasional conflict with the render code and dumps Final Cut?

Just a thought. Probably a dead end, but I’d be curious to know who has those internal arrays and is having crashes. And if you DON’T have internal arrays and are still experiencing crashes, or if you DO have the arrays and are not having crashes, I’d like to know that, too, so I could at least eliminate that avenue of investigation. Because of the intensity of my work at present I can’t take my own array out to experiment, unfortunately.

    Thanks!

I’d guess that to be a dead end Mike…

I’d rather suspect something else. I’d guess it’s either the RAM installed, or your software install is funky. When you installed Tiger, did you perform a clean install? If not try that, and just ‘Upgrading” an OS or a version of the studio is probably not as clean as installing over a brand spankin’ new OS…

But since it’s been going on for a while, I’d suspect hardware… might have your Mac’s checked out… or at least check out the RAM chips you have in the machines.

    Hi, Jerry,

Thanks for the quick reply. Everything you mention has been done more than once without success. The most recent batch of memory has been tested thus: I removed 2GB, and the problem mostly went away. I took the 2GB that was working out and put the other 2GB in. Still the problem did not return. I have now done that several times. All the RAM works. The problem is only bad when I have 4GB in the machine AND the Kona 3 installed. If I either go down to 2GB OR take out the Kona 3 the problem pretty much goes away.

Believe me, many a squeaky clean fresh install has been done. That’s why I’m grasping at counterintuitive straws here.

    Thanks!

    Mike
