  • FCP crashing when adding a clip to timeline.

Posted by Olivier Aubut on October 14, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Hi guys
I’ve been having crashing issues for quite some time now. FCP keeps crashing, at least once a day. It seems to happen when I drag a clip from the viewer to the timeline.

I’m working exclusively with multiclips on this project so I don’t know if the crashing still occurs on normal clips.

It happens randomly, but always when I’m dragging a clip to the timeline and I can’t reproduce the crash, so I’m ruling out the “bad clip” possibility. I’ve tried trashing my prefs.

    I’m running FCP 6.0.6
OSX 10.5.8 on an octo 3.2 GHz with 8 GB of RAM, Kona LH
Dvcpro HD on a G-Speed XL connected through Fiber Channel.

Here’s a link to the crash report: 327_fcpcrashreport.rtf.zip

Any help is much appreciated. I’m starting to show signs of carpal tunnel syndrome hitting command-s every 30 seconds. 😉

What OS is this? What version of QuickTime?

It could be a hardware issue.

    All the best,

    Tom

You might want to contact AJA, but I think it may be a hardware problem on the computer, RAM or processor.

    All the best,

    How big is your project?

I did some multicam work (9 xdcam dvcam) when my project size got larger ( more than 100Mb) I experienced many crashes.

Try and trim your project and see if the crashes still happen?

I found that just doing a “save-as” and deleting sequences etc. does not work.

You need to make a new project and transfer sequences etc into it.

    Thank you Tom
I’ll try to uprade to the latest Kona driver, and if that doesn’t help I’ll contact AJA.

    Thanks for your help Steve.
This particular project is only 13 MB, but I’ve had problems before with projects bigger than 100MB as well.
I should start a new thread for this but have you had the chance to work with multiclips on FCP7? Is it more stable?
