  • FCP crashing on EDL import

Posted by Lauren Petty on September 11, 2008 at 4:13 pm

I am working on a piece which is a document of a one hour play. I have seven tapes of the show and digitized them in full in 15 minute sections. I then edited the show in 15 minute sections in four separate sequences.

Due to a failing harddrive, I am now moving the project to another drive and have been trimming the media as I go (I was nearly done when the drive started failing) by exporting individual EDLs from each sequence and then re-digitizing the edits with handles. The first three sequences worked with no problems – but for some reason the fourth 15 minutes is not working. I export the EDL and then when I try to re-import it into FCP it crashes the software every time.

I can open this problem EDL in FCP (as well as word, excel…) and the information looks fine. But, I think there must be some little quirk to the fourth sequence edit that is causing a problem. I have removed all transitions from the edit – and even tried the export/import on another computer but the same thing keeps happening.

Has anyone ever seen this before? I have a feeling that is it some small issue that is causing this to happen but I have yet to find the reason…

    Thanks for any ideas!

    hi

If you are moving the project from one fcp system to another, all you need to do is copy the project and what media you can to the other system, then recapture from the bins.

EDLs are only necessary when moving to different edit systems, like from FCP to Premeire or avid.

    does this help?

Thanks for the thoughts – but this does not help.

I am using the EDLs in order to create trimmed batch lists of the edits. I was nearly done – just color correcting – and so don’t need to re-digitize the entire seven hours of material (which was nearly 90gb) – I only want to digitize the 15-ish gigs that represent the final edit.

This is the way I know to create a trim from the sequence for recapture. Is there another way? (media manager does not give me quite what I need).

[Lauren Petty] “Is there another way? (media manager does not give me quite what I need).”

Actually, Media Manager does exactly that. you can create a new sequence from the sequence you made the EDL without media. If you select to delete unused media and set handles, it will break long files into short ones to recapture, same as going via EDL but maintaining all your FCP info including CC filters, resizing etc.

Thanks for the response. Media Manager and I have never gotten along and it still is not working for me now (and I had tried it before the EDL method…).

If I try to process it again – it sends out an edit but wants me to digitize 43 gigs for a 15 min. sequence. It does not seem to be trimming – even when I check the “delete unused”. Hmmm…

What version of FCP are you running? I use Media Manager on a lot of jobs and I only recapture the final sequence shots plus handles. So it does work for me in the way you want it to. You don’t have a timelapse shot in your sequence by any chance or any speed changed clips?

Sadly (and embarrassingly…) I am still on version 5 in my own studio (I am a starving artist type and can’t afford to upgrade…). But, I do work on 6 on jobs and don’t know that it is different on this front.

I know media manager is supposed to do this – that is why I tried it first – but as I said, it does not seem to give me just the trimmed shots. This edit is straight cuts only – each camera master shot is 15min but I probably use only 1-4min per camera in the final edit.

    In Media Manager I chose:
    ‘Create Offline’
‘Delete unused media’ with one second handles (and deselected ‘include master clips outside selection’)

But, I have tried it many times and with different combinations of options. I have tried it from the Timeline window and from the Browser. What I am doing wrong? Any thoughts…

Or any other thoughts on the original EDL question as that method is working for what I need – but I still cannot import the last one.

    Thanks!
