  • FCP Crashes While Capturing HELP!!!

I am capturing MiniDV tapes from a Panasonic camcorder onto a GLYPH 1TB hard drive using my PowerBook G4. When I do capture now (or any kind of capturing) it will capture for anywhere from 3sec to a min then the tape with pause and FCP will crash/”unexpectedly quit”. I’ve tried going right to my internal HD and it still does it, and I have some other tapes that work fine, so this leads me to believe that its a problem with my tapes. Has anyone had this problem before? Is there a way to clean tapes? Its all the tapes in this one box, what could have happened to them that they would act like this? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Thank You!

It could also be bad timecode, you might have a batch of wonky tapes (are they the same brand as the rest of the tapes?), or the camcorder could’ve been going.

The easy way to test this out is in your Capture Settings tab in your Log and Capture window, where it probably says Firewire, flip that to Non-Controllable Device. See if you can capture the tape. If you can, great, kind of. You get your footage but no timecode, which could be a problem later down the line.

The other option I’ve had to do (only once I might add) was to dub the tape to another tape over s-video/rca cables. This is a total pain and a weapon of last resort, but it could save your sanity 🙂

Thanks guys. This was the response I was expecting, but I was hoping there might be some magical cure or something hahaha. The non-controllable device thing seems to be working which is, like you said, good, kind of. I’ve never seen time code so messed up!

The filming was done in Haiti went to NYC and is now to PA so they certainly have done some traveling. I’ll try to get a head cleaner and see if that helps as well. Thanks for the help!

You may also want to check that your “capture now “preference is set to more than 1 -3 minutes. After checking and resetting the preference close final cut and re-open the program and create a new project and give it a try. If the tapes are playing in your deck then it’s probably not your tape stock that’s causing the problem. Also, time code breaks, (ie. if you frequently watched or played back footage while recording on that tape, and rewound to the end of a clip and left blank space in between the last clip and the next clip, this could well be your problem. FCP capture now does not like timecode breaks and will abort the capture process if it senses dropouts or timecode errors. For this reason, it’s best to never rewind and look at your footage until you are finished recording on that particular tape. Hope that helps! STU

I know alot….but not as much as the other guy.
