FCP crashes when rendering – getting desperate!
I apologize for the long post. I’m usually one to figure things out on my own but I have a deadline looming (tomorrow) and I’ve about reached the end of my rope. I’ve never missed a deadline before but things are not looking good! If anyone can point me in a different direction I would greatly appreciate it!
THE PROBLEM
I have a 4min music video all cut and ready for output on the timeline. Looks and plays beautifully from the timeline. When trying to export as a reference file for processing in compressor -or- doing a “render all” it will chunk on the file for about 30-45min then FCP crashes with the common “Final Cut experienced an Unexpected error and needs to shut down…” On one or two crashes, I did get a message that “It might be caused by the ProApps Plug-in”. But most of them have just been the standard error.THE VIDEO AND MY SETUP
* Video was shot in HDV 1080p 30 using a Sony Z7U.
* FCP Version 6.0.6
* Mac OS 10.5.7
* iMac 24″ 3.0GHz 4GB RAM also MacBook Pro 2.8GHz 4GB RAM
* Seq Settings;
Frame size 1440×1080
Field Dominance: None
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Compressor: HDV 1080p30
* Source Media is located on an OWC Mercury Elite Pro FW800 DriveI have done many video’s using these exact settings and video format. The only difference on this go around is I performed some extensive image enhancements in Motion on every clip (about 70 of them total). I did this by sending the clips to Motion from the timeline, making my changes, then saving back out. I’ve done this many times before but I guess not to the extent that I did on this project. Not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.
WHAT I’VE TRIED
* I’m getting the same results on both the iMac and the MacBook Pro
* Rebooted both machines many times
* Trashed Preferences
* Tried both render all and export to QT reference file multiple times.
* Checked HDD with Disc utility (checks out fine)
* I just created a new empty sequence and copied/pasted the timeline into it and hit render all on the MacBook Pro. It’s saying it’s going to take between 7 & 8 hours – WHAT THE HECK…If this render doesn’t work I’m not sure what to try next! Perhaps I should have brought all the footage in as Pro-res as opposed to HDV. At this point that would kill me to re-do.
Any suggestions??

Try rendering small pieces of the timeline – say 15 seconds at a time or even less. Since you have s short film, it may be best to render one shot at a time. You can then isolate the shot or shots which are causing the crashing.
Don’t export as a reference file – do an export as a Quicktime file.
Then let me know how you get on. OK?
This can be fixed. I’ve had trouble with crashing on renders a hell of a lot. You have to find the troublesome patch by a process of elimination.
So, in order to render bit by bit, only highlight the piece you are going to render, and then, render JUST the highlighted piece. You will find that there is a command for doing this in the drop down menu.
