  • FCP Crashes upon Playback – Blackmagic, Uncompressed footage

I am having full on crashes when playing back Blackmagic or Uncompressed footage in FCP.

FCP had a clean install. PRAM was zapped. I am fully updated and with the proper drivers. Computer is brand new. Everything else is operating completely fine, but again, FCP crashes. I noticed this posting:

Which says Blackmagic cannot handle over 3G of Ram. Is this true? If so, when will this be fixed (as I am currently running 8G’s)?

Do you have any other ideas as to why I would be crashing?

    My comp specifics:
    MAC OS X
    10.4.8
    2 x 3Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    8 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Blackmagic Decklink Extreme PCIe (driver 5.9.2)
    FCP 5.1.2

Please feel free to contact me at any time.
    Thanks guys.

I would check with Blackmagic about this.

BUT you didn’t tell us what video array was. Is it a fiber channel RAID or External RAID drives? This makes a HUGE difference. The conflict could be with your drive interface card. ATTO cards have trouble with the Mac Pro and new drivers have been written to solve this (well, sort of…). You need to make sure that you RAID controller is up to date with the Mac Pro.

Not on G5 Quad Machines at least.

I have 4gb ram and a black magic multibridge extreme.

    no problems.

Just heard back from Kristian Lam over at Blackmagic Design. He says:

    “Hi Robert,

This is a RAM limitation. I would currently recommend you use only 2GB and not 3GB of RAM. This is something we’re looking into. Unfortunately, I don’t have a date when this issue will be resolved.”

    So there it is.
