  • FCP Crashes! – Trying to use AVIs converted to ProRes in Final CUt Pro

    Hello,

Final Cut Pro keeps crashing (8-12 times a day) and i’m trying to figure out why.

I have .avi files from a Nikon D3s that I converted to Pro Res 422 to edit with in FCP. I am also editing with 422 footage that I converted from .M2T files from a Sony HVR-Z7U.

In the Quicktime inspector the “Format”(codec?) of the avi file is Apple Open DML JPEG 1280×720. I converted them with MPEG Stream Clip to Apple Pro Res 422 (LT)1920×1080

    My Sequence Settings are
    Compressor: Apple Pro Res 422(LT)
    Frame Size: 1920×1080 HDTV 1080i(16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square

    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 32 GB 800Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz

I have already tried trashing prefs, Using Disc Warrior to rebuild the Startup Drive, and ReInstalling the OS. My Guess is it’s the avi files I converted. or the Apple RAID Card See Posts:

    hope some one can help!

    ok you have 2 options
1 pass it through compressor as a 1080p mov
2 import it to adobe aftereffects and export it as a lossless + alpha and audio file in a 9120 by 1080p mov file and then import it into fcp
FCP cannot cope with .AVI files

    Hi Santiago

I used MPEG Streamclip to convert the files to Apple ProRes 422 1920×1080. Do you know of a reason why that wouldn’t/didn’t work?

all i can think is that the codec isn’t compatible with FCP (AVI codec still Imbedded in the MPEG stream) the 422 is grate do it with compressor though so its native to the FCP system. Check also your setup in FCP makes sure to set it up beforehand to be 1920X 1080p @ 422 you can change that in the user preferences. And make sure the file extension is .mov makes it easier for render and play back for FCP. FCP is grate but lets make it easier on the system. ^_^
