  • FCP crashes on Log and Transfer

Hi. After about a month of success with the HDR SR 7, using Log & Transfer and the AVCHD Plugin to grab the HD files, all of a sudden FCP 6.0.1 crashes when I try this process.

    Mac Pro Quad 2 X 2.66 5gig
    Quicktime 7.20
    OS 10.4.10
    FCP 6.0.1
    4 internal hard drives X 500 GB

The log and transfer window opens, the left window displays all the AVC files on the camera and I am able to play the files in the video window on the right. But as soon as I add a file to the transfer window FCP crashes with only the message that it has quit unexpectedly. FCP has always been very stable in the past. It seems obvious that it is the process of converting that is causing the problem. It happens if I have the ProRes or the Intermediate option picked in the preferences.

I have reinstalled the 6.0.1 update and trashed preferences with Rescue. I cannot remember if there has been a Quicktime update since everything was working well. I have cleaned using Disk Warrior.

Any suggestions on what I should try next would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I wish I could tell you. I am now having the same problem. Log and Transfer crashes or just simply won’t recognize the Panasonic AVCHD file structure, so no files appear.

    Very strange.

Let me know if you find anything out. Sounds like a bug.

    Best,
    M

Has anyone else had this problem?
Have you reported this bug to Apple?

Everytime I test something new and FCP crashes I report it to Apple. So far no responses.

Hi Martin. That is exactly my situation. I too tried the new imovie and had the exact same crash. The frustration is that FCP with the new AVC plugin worked fine inicially. Now it only crashes.

Mine also worked properly at first.
I tried reinstalling, but no effect.

It would be so nice to have a reader and browser for the AVCHD format to avoid extracting the clips to intermediary codec or else that take a lot more space on the drives and although wouldn’t look better.

Just re compressing when needed should be implemented by now… Even if it means to buy another app or even a PC.

The apps supplied by SONY for my SR7 permit the transfert to PC in native format I can browse and preview, but I cant convert to a suitable format for editing. SONY want us to switch to there NLE. And I think thats an error to push the costumers like that.

Hi Martin. I agree. Sony is making it very difficult and, as you said, it worked fine at first…very weird. I have tried every variable I can think of. I have posted the problem with Larry Jordan and every place else I can think of.
If you have any other thoughts please let me know.
It is sad since when it was working the video was great (although, as you said, after transfer to FCP the file size is much larger) but it was working. Too weird.

    Thanks,

    Rob

Hi. I reinstalled FC Studio and OS X and it is again working. I don’t know for how long. Long and Transfer does not crash in both Final Cut Studio and imovie8 also transfers properly.

    Hi,
I am having the same exact problem. Using the hdc-sd5 and once I connect the camera iMovie / Final Cut Pro crash (log & transfer) crash at the exact same place. Any resolution and or suggestions to this problem?
