FCP crashes and error code -600 What the…*#
Posted by Monica F.p.williams on May 18, 2006 at 10:33 pmHi everyone, I am working on a doc whith a huge amount of material (100 hours)(!)
my system crashes 3/4 times a day and even if I save frequently, every time I lose some of the work done (VERY frustrating) I am not doing effects or complicated thing, I am at most using two video tracks for sync two cameras. After FCP crashes when I try to reopen it, I get this message:
An unexpected error occurred (error code -600)
I went and look on apple support but no luck….
any Ideas? PLEEEEEASE.

May 19, 2006 at 3:51 amI’m guessing it’s time to split up your project file. I’ve just finished up a doc that probably had the same if not more hours onboard. Could’ve been a nightmare. But, thankfully, I know one of FCP’s weaknesses is its database.
Do you still have all your stuff, from the very beginning, in one project file?
If so, take out only your main sequence and start a new project. I start this from the very beginning, keeping a separate file for just Log & Capture. Then, I take selects into a new project file to start cutting. Then, when I’ve got multiple cuts, I take the current seq’s into a new project. The thing is, you can really mess things up when you’re trying to open multiple huge seq’s, plus tons of clips and media all in one project. But, FCP does fine when they’re open side by side in separate projects.
HTH!

May 19, 2006 at 3:57 amBTW (if you’ve read my post below)…
If you’re having trouble even opening FCP, try unplugging your FW drive before booting up your Mac and launch your project. That way, all your media files should be offline. That way, you should at least be able to save a backup of your current project file.

May 19, 2006 at 5:21 pmHi! thank you for the good suggestions.
I totally agree on your take on the huge database, I’ll try that.
I am the last of several people tha worked in this doc and for several reasons (lack of experience in managing FCP etc etc) I have the files all over the place ,backups ,QT of entire timelines from 3 years ago, together with other files that should’t be in the media drives,
I just checked there are 5 different capture scratch folders. I think that this also could be the issue.
hard for FCP to have to go look for files all over.
So what if I consolidate all media files with media manager in one drive that will contain only 1 capture scratch that belong to the project?
I hope that this make sense(sometimes my english is not really correct)
Thanks
ciao

Yes, this is something you definitely learn from experience after using the program for a huge project.
You could consolidate to a clean drive, definitely, or you could start a new project and just move what you need into it and work with the existing media. I think, based on my own experience, it’s most important at this stage to reduce the load inside the project itelf (number of sequences, clips, subclips, etc) and see if that helps. Try taking only your main sequence into a fresh new project and see if that helps.
Have you lost any data? Or is your project file opening okay?
Consolidating will streamline your project and create a new project for you, too, so I don’t think you can go wrong with that. What I’d do, though, to be safe, is make Media Manager *copy* with the ‘delete unused media’ checked and target a new drive for the media. That way, you will consolidate, but still have your original media intact as a backup (until you can ensure everything is okay and then you could just get rid of it, if that’s what you want to do).
Hope that helps!
Ron
