FCP crash when exporting HDV timeline
Hi,
I have used FCP for many years with few hitches. Now that I’m using it for HDV that’s changed!
I’m running FCP 5.04 on a dual 2 Ghz G5 with a firewire external HD (1 TB) (I’ve used about only 100 gigs of space)
When I try to work with HDV I’ve noticed it drops frames a lot. However, the real problem is when I try to export an HDV timeline to make a contained file for importing into DVD Studio Pro: FCP crashes about half way through the process every time. It results also in my hard drive crashing, and in the most recent attempt, caused the hard drive to no longer mount on the desktop! Super bad news!
has anyone experienced this problem? Any advice on how to fix this?
I have footage that my client is wating for and I can’t get it out of my machine!

Personally I would not try to edit video off of FW, I would either do internal or SATA or Fiber Channel…. The only thing I use firewire for is for storage unless its a portable system….
Have you looked in disc util to see if it recognized there and is just not mounting…?
Also try unplugging any other FW devices and just plug the drive in… unless thats your only one, I would also try seeing if it will mount on a different computer… if yes then run disc util on it…

Simon, thanks for the reply. Yes, it appears in disk utility, but won’t mount on desk top. I could initialize it, obviously, but would lose all data.
I’m thinking that G-Raid is a bad choice in hard drives to begin with. I’m considering buying a kona card and a different drive system and converting the HDV into DVCProHD and working with it like this (as suggested in other threads).
