In FCP when exporting using Quicktime Conversion, you can export to MPEG-4. Which is pretty much the same as exporting using Quicktime Pro. There, you have the option of using H.264 Video Format for MPEG-4 encoding. These always look great and I use this all the time for our web guys. They prefer MPEG-4 files over H.264 .mov files.

Without using FCP, how do you create a H.264, MP4 file using Compressor? I’d use QT, but I have a whole batch to do and don’t want to do them 1×1. Compressor doesn’t give you the option of creating a H.264, MP4 files. When I create MP4 files in Compressor, I get a MP4 with no H.264. You can see this below.

Is there a way to create great looking H.264, MP4 files in Compressor just like in QT Pro & from the FCP timeline?

First image is from QT Pro.

    2nd is from Compressor

    Matt,

There’s no preset, but the capability is for encoding MP4 is certainly right there in Compressor. You’ll have to create you own custom preset…

At the upper right of the Settings module in Compressor is a “+” with a little arrow next to it — that’s your “Create new setting” button. Have no fear… just do it.

Sorry David, maybe I didn’t explain enough. I do have presets created in Compressor, but those MP4 files are not H.264 encoded MP4s. The ones I create in QT and FCP QT conversion are great and I want to create the same thing in Compressor because I have a lot to do. I can’t find anywhere in Compressor to select the Video Format of H.264 for MP4 files.

Does that make sense? The image below is from the QT conversion in FCP. You have the option to select H.264, MP4-Basic, MP4-Improved or None. I’m looking for that H.264.

    Humm??? My bad!

Have you tried Streamclip yet? It has airly robust MP4 export capabilities, and it handles batch encoding

    Matt,

In Compressor, look under FORMATS/QUICKTIME and you will find H.264. At least that’s how it is in FCP 6.

David, thx. Didn’t think about. I always use streamclip for conversion and didn’t think to use for end product encoding. thx.

Thanks Chris, but I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m refering too. I can create H.264 .mov files fine. And I can create MP4 files fine. But what I’m trying to mimic is QT Pro’s ability to create MP4 files using H.264. Similar to the file types that YouTube likes. They take H.264 .mov files but prefer H.264 files with a MP4 wrapper. QT Pro does this but I can’t find a way to do this in Compressor.

No worries, I’ll figure something out. As David suggested, MPEG Streamclip.

[Chris Babbitt] “In Compressor, look under FORMATS/QUICKTIME and you will find H.264. At least that’s how it is in FCP 6.

That preset produces an h.264 encoded video with a Quicktime .mov file wrapper. Matt needs an .mp4, not a .mov. They are different file wrapper types, and .mp4 files are preferable in some cases.

Adobe Media Encoder can produce h.264 encoded files with an .mp4 wrapper, but it doesn’t appear to be possible in Compressor.

Got it. I have CS5, so I’ll give that a try as well. thx Alan.

In reading this thread it is obvious I don’t know my codecs like I thought I did. Aren’t Mpeg 4 and H.264 basically the same thing, and if not what are the differences and what are typical applications of each? I do know that the compression of AVCHD is basically Mpeg 4, which if I understand it right, is a more efficient cousin of Mpeg 2. But i was under the impression that H.264 was just an Apple version of it.
