I am attempting to export a 41 minute final cut in FCP 6.0.4 to an mpeg 2 file.
I select all the clips in the edit and then go to export > compressor. I select a pre-set mpeg conversion setup and press submit.
5 times, FCP has closed down during the export process after about 30-55 minutes into the process. In the past I have had some success making a shorter mpeg 2 file with using the same process and set up.

But this is the first long form export to mpeg I’ve down. BTW I am editing on a MacBook Pro with 4 GB of ram (if that is helpful in figuring what’s going wrong). All the media and all the files related to the edit are on an external HD connected with an 800 firewire connection.

I talked to someone on the Apple helpline. He suggested I try making QT movie first and then importing into the compressor. I had the same FCP shutdown when I tried to do that…. He suggested I delete my render files and then re-render. I am now doing that…

    –Apple was right.

    1) Render your timeline fully, video and audio.
    2) In the browser window, select your timeline and export it to your external drive, “Current Settings” choice.
    2) Quit FCP. You don’t need it to make the mpeg now.
    3) Launch Compressor.
    5) Bring that Quicktime into Compressor.
    6) Select your DVD compression setting, etc. etc.

    I followed your advice:

FCP closed down during the end of the export to QT render process.
I found the .mov file that made. Like other times a message came up when I attempted to import the .mov file into compressor: “Error trying to open source media.”

So I’m trying to figure out is there something about the size – 41 minutes – and/or the fact that the project with all media is on a separate HD that is the problem. I have transcoded smaller projects (20 minutes) to mpeg 2 from this hard drive.

You found the .mov file FCP made, but could you open and play it in Quicktime? If not it may be corrupt.

Your media (but not your project file) should be on the external drive, but is there enough space on your external hard drive to export the movie? That external drive should not be more than 80percent full.

Apart from the above issues, the other common remedies are trashing your FCP preferences and trashing all your timeline’s renders and re-rendering them.

I’m running a test on another project – ie, attempting to export a 40 min project to mpeg 2. When its done, I’ll try your suggestions.
