FCP Changing Frame Rate After Import
Posted by Bobby Hall on August 4, 2017 at 10:45 pmI imported some 29.97 fps H.264 footage into FCPX and chose optimized media. I noticed that my sequence settings said 30p, not 29.97p. I then looked at the optimized media files and they say 30 fps. Is this normal? Why is FCP converting the 29.97 footage into 30?

August 6, 2017 at 8:01 amWhen I open the transcoded files in MPEG Streamclip and click “show stream info” it says 30fps there too. So is FCPX somehow changing the metadata to say 30fps even though it’s 29.97? I understand that FCP would list it as 30, but I find it strange that another program would also list it as 30.

August 6, 2017 at 6:48 pmIt’s iPhone footage that MPEG Streamclip lists as 29.975. I’ve never seen that frame rate before. Maybe it’s really just 29.97, but either way I find it strange that FCPX converts it to 30.

August 6, 2017 at 7:39 pmiPhone footage is notorious for being variable framerate. It changes slightly to compensate for exposure, etc.
If FCP converted it to a fixed frame rate that’s a plus–since otherwise you would need to do this outside your NLE.
Maybe it picked the best option. Maybe it’s still variable and that’s what FCP chooses to report.Robert Withers

Robert explained it, but iPhone footage isn’t necessarily 29.97
If you need actual 29.97, I’d run the originals through compressor, forcing 29.97 keeping the retiming to “fastest”. Unless the clips are really long, it shouldn’t mess with timing too much.
