FCP- buy version 7 now and upgrade in 6 weeks or wait?
Hi
Decided on FCP for my editing needs but with an imminent release of FCP 8 (rumours say around NAB April 11-14) not sure whether I should buy FCP7 now and upgrade, or wait till the FCP release?Anyone care to share their thoughts? What is the cost of the typical Apple upgrade? Should I be able to get the FCP 8 upgrade for free?

If you need to use FCP 7 now, buy it. You can get it for around $250-$280.
If you don’t need it today, wait.

yeah, and if its gonna sell for the same $ as 7, don’t want to have to shell out a single penny for the upgrade.
Just wonder’n if Apple normally has a ‘no upgrade fee if purchased in last 90 days’ or something similar policy…Local is the new global

Some people thought the last version was going to be released in April of 2009 because previous versions where released in April and it wasn’t. It was released in July. How long do you want to wait until you get to sink your teeth into FCP?

Ok, it’s been stated many times already, but I’ll jump on the bandwagon. If FCS3 will do what you want right now with the hardware you have or plan to have, then go for it. You can always get the upgrade price for anything new unless you’re getting an educational version (it’s not worth it in the long run, just get the regular version).
With the release of the FCP, there could be new hardware requirements (for example, Thunderbolt was just announced, though I’m pretty sure new versions will still support Firewire). What about 3D? What about the increasing number of HD formats?

FCP 8 will most likely not ship earlier than June based on previous releases. Do you need to edit with FCP 7 today or can you just wait for whenever Apple decides to release the next version?
