I keep getting an error message: “Clips fail to capture due to breaks in VFR pull down cadence”
I am capturing varicam footage shot at 24p using a 1200a deck over firewire into FCP 5. My drives are 1 huge sytem SATA and two 1TB G-Riads. This error only happens on a handful of clips on differnet tapes. It is driving me crazy since I have over 100 tapes to capture. i am using teh easy setup for DVCPRO/24p.

    Please help,

    Thanks,
    Sean

It means that the tape was most likely shot with time of day code, or shot 24P in one take and 60p on the next. If this is the case, then you need to log and capture around the breaks.

    Believe, pain in the patoot.

Unfortunatly these are not teh problems. The tapes are all shot at 24 p with normal time code not Time of day.

I ran into this same problem and found a forum that seemed to explain it. It doesn’t have to do with frame rate or timecode. It has to do with how clips are flagged for the pulldown. Each time you stop recording with the camera it begins a new pulldown cadence and that’s what confuses Final Cut. Sometimes the cadence happens to stop and start at the same point, so you don’t get that error — but it’s just luck. So, the only solution I’ve found so far is to UNCHECK “Remove Advanced Pulldown” in your capture settings and then have Cinema Tools deal with cadence issues. I can’t remember where I found that post or I’d link to it here. But I hope that helps.
