FCP audio suddenly completely vanished and mute
Posted by Dinah Aslanzadeh on May 27, 2010 at 2:17 pmHi
I’ve been using FCP for years now and am usually able to find advice in previous posts here but have come across something I simply can’t solve.
Working on an HDV project in FCP 6 with 8 audiotracks, out of the blue audio tracks 3 to 8 are completely muted halfway down the sequence… is it possible to partially mute an audio track somehow? All of the settings seem to be correct, no mute buttons pressed or anything.
Even inside the viewer, the selected audio is muted whereas the rest of the clip is audible.
Anyone with any ideas?

May 27, 2010 at 3:57 pmHave you tried re-linking the media?
Anything muted in the audio tool?

May 27, 2010 at 8:11 pmHello
Thanks, re-linking it didn’t work though… not sure what you mean by the audio tool? I’ve checked everything ten times and no mutes are selected from what I can see…

May 27, 2010 at 8:17 pmHi John,
Thank you for the suggestion, I have tried that now and that didn’t work either.. any other ideas are very welcome, I’m at the point where I’ll try a ritual dance if there’s a chance it might fix this 🙂

May 27, 2010 at 9:58 pmIn the Tools Menu select Audio Mixer. Then put the playhead where there IS audio. You should see a level indicated – probably it says “0” which means 0db – not zero audio. This is the normal default audio level. Now put the playhead where you hear NO audio. If it says “-inf” that means the audio volume was somehow reduced all the way. Then, try raising it with the vertical sliders in the Audio Mixer to 0. If on the other hand it says “0” then I’m stumped.

May 27, 2010 at 11:09 pmHi again John
Thank you for the tip, I tried that too and all the audio tracks in use are on O even where there is no sound… So no progress. Could it be a bug in the software?

May 27, 2010 at 11:18 pmNow all of a sudden the whole of that sequence became completely muted without me doing anything… surely that must be a bug? Is FCP about to crash or something?

May 28, 2010 at 12:02 amIs all the audio 48khz? Are there any audio renders? Are there plugins on the muted audio that are not in your system?
I would try deleting audio render files and see if any audio needs rendering. Check the ones that need rendering to see if it is a sample rate problem or mp3 file or a plugin.

May 28, 2010 at 12:10 amHave you done the usual maintenance routine – Trashed preferences & repaired permissions?
Have you tried to copy a section into a new project & sequence to see if it will play. Does the audio register on the meter?

May 28, 2010 at 9:11 pmHello to all you supercool people and thanks so much for all the guidance and help… it was fixed thanks to your advice by clearing the render files through the render manager which I hadn’t done before… have moved the project around and changed the scratch disk a few times which I guess caused some confusion for fcp and I hadn’t found all the render files in the finder.
