    Hello Everybody,

    is there a plug-in or application for FCP that allows me to easily archive a large amount of after effects generated quicktime movies (all of them in the blackmagic codec) to a digibeta tape and recapture them later with the same filename? Just like archiving works on Henry or Flame.

    Unfortunately there is no such thing and unfortunately FCP is not scriptable. You can import all of your clips into a project, drop them onto the timeline, set the Ganging to Open and modify clip TC to match timeline TC copying from the Canvas Current TC field to the Modify TC dialog. Then edit to a pre-striped Digibeta tape at the in point matching the one on the timeline. If you know someone who can figure out FCP XML this can make a nice AppleScript utility.

    LOL… I just flashed back on the black magic of archiving/loading material on Quantel gear… Anyway, I took a rendered file, and gave it a reel #, then loaded it into the Viewer & modified timecode to a likely # – 1:00:10:00. SO… now FCP thinks it came from Reel 001 with starting TC of 1:00:10:00. I would THINK if I then recorded it to tape at that TC, deleted it online, and then batch captured, it would ask for that tape/TC. OK, so it’s not scriptable, but isn’t that why we interns? 😉 Drop your clips on the timeline, give all the clips a source reel #, then cut n’ paste starting TC from the timeline to the clip’s new modified starting TC.
    WHY CAN’T WE HAVE MACROS??????

    I purchased an app called Mezzo. It is FCP friendly. You just drag your FCP project file to Mezzo and it gathers all the asociated files with your project and archives them to an external tape back up. (I use super DLT drive). Mezzo does not archive to video tape. DLT’s drives are not cheep but Mezzo works really well. When you are ready to resore a project you simply drop the original FCP project file back to your desktop or where ever and Mezzo restores all your files in cluding renders. It has been working great for me. Mezzo is much more as well.

    When you import FCP creates the clip name from the file name. Then you capture FCP create file name from the logged clip name. So the names will be preserved but check how this routine affects the extensions – I suspect there could be some xxx.mov.mov.mov stupidness after a couple of passes.

    One way I’d like to see this used is similar to the way we conform and grade negative in Digital Intermediate projects. We send an edl to the neg cutter and they create a neg cut with handles and a new edl that conforms the film from that neg cut. The neg cut is usually assembled using A-mode sorting but could be c-mode if necessary.

    The way I see this workflow employed in Final Cut Pro is for offline edits that start to conform and grade before they’re finished. This way an edl could be created that allows the assembly of the film with handles. This assembly is graded and loaded into the conform system. As changes come in, the film can be re-conformed without having to unpick the old edits or grade over dissolves, etc.

    This would have been very useful on a recent HD project with a DV offline.
