Below are the Apple TV specs. Given that the video could not actually play off the FCP timeline and would have to be compressed, I’m not quite certain what advantage that would actually create for any of us???

    Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels or 640 by 480 pixels
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

    Audio formats supported
AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV

    Photos formats supported
    JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG
    TV compatibility
    Enhanced-definition or high-definition widescreen TVs capable of 1080i 60/50Hz, 720p 60/50Hz, 576p 50Hz (PAL format), or 480p 60Hz

Without cracking the apple TV I dont think it is able to do what you want. But another alternative if you have an SDI output… you can get the AJA HI5 converter and it will convert to HDMI.

“has anyone tried to use AppleTV hardware feed an HD monitor via HDMI from FCP? ”

I’m not quite sure I know what you mean. Do want sent video to the Apple TV straight from FCP?

The HDMI and Component connections on the Apple TV is output only. ALL media must go on from iTunes.

That said I have put content onto my Apple TV that I have edited in FCP. It looked GREAT. It is a fairly inexpensive way to show HD content at a remote location. Put it on your Apple TV and just hook it up the a HDTV anywhere. It is also a inexpensive way to distribute HD content. It is cheeper then a HD DVD or Blue Ray Player (not to mention you don’t have to buy a HD DVD or Blue Ray burner)

    Hey zrb…

This is interesting. How exactly would you go about distributing it? Sorry if that’s a dumb question. I just have no idea what kind of file sizes we’re talking about.

You can give them a simple data DVD with the file and let them add it to there iTunes and then to the Apple TV. Or you can sync all your clients videos to the Apple TV from your office and then just hook up the Apple TV at your clients location.

I did a 18 min video and it turned tout being just under 500 mb in size. I used visual hub to convert it.

Keep in mind that the 720p video that the Apple TV supports must be 24 fps so you may need to convert the frame rate.

Actually – although the apple website says nothing about it – 25fps is supported at 720p. I’ve had sucessful 25 frame encodes play back.

Shouldn’t make a difference – as far as I’m aware the playback support for codecs are the same no matter where you bought your appleTV.
