I know this has been on here before but could not find it.

We are working on a project and created a photoshop file to import into FCP. The file was transparent with PSD layers that we rasterized so to key over the media in FCP. The PSD has type, a color layer and images. (Basically this is a 1-800 number with company logos)

Our sequence is a 40:27 (720 x 486) SIZE. When we created the PSD we made the size 720 x 540 so that when it came into FCP is was coverted due to PSD using square pixels and FCP using rectangluar pixels. Well the PSD is not the right size, it is stretched.

We gave that up recreated the PSD in AE rendering it as animation with RGB +Alpha Straight Unmatted and then brought the AE movie file into FCP. Same thing stretched. Now that is totally weird. The AE comp was set to 40:27 (720 x 486).

I thought maybe the problem was the fact that the footage was DV 16:9 anamorphic and we are editing it onto a 40:27 sequence to letterbox it, but when I opened a new project and imported the PSD and the movie from AE same thing.

What on earth am I missing here? We are still getting used to FCP having replaced our Media 100 and AVIDS with it, but these format issues that we encounter again and again are driving us nuts!

    Thanks for your help.

Open the Motion tab for the PSD layer in the timeline and check the Distortion box. You can set it to anything you wish.

FCP can be set to automatically scale your imported media. It’s all quite needlessly confusing, especially coming form Media 100 or Avid where the application assumed you knew what you were doing.

Unsolicited editorial comment: FCP’s designers assumed you’re an idiot and have made many decisions for you. Wait till you run up against AutoSelect.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

The number that you are looking for under ViewerMotion tab > Distort > is -12.5.

This is the number you will find in the Distort field if a correct 720 x 540 .PSD file is imported into FCP to produce 720 x 486 footage. This number also works when odd shaped square pixel graphics are imported that saves you from pasting them inside a square pixel 720 x 540 canvas in Photoshop.
