of DV through the firewire. It was working fine and then it stopped. Now if it digitizes the dv files are HUGE and generally just a still image…yet my tape image is moving.

Whats puzzling me is why the enitre system would crash.

I have a Dual 2.5 GHz power pc G5 with 4 GB DDR SDRAM. Running FCP 4HD

this seems to be a new problem.

It could be a problem with the drive you’re capturing to. What kind is it and how is it connected and formated? How much space does it have free?

If you can, move everything off of it and re-format it.

These are just ideas, but hard drives can often be a source of capture problems.

I am capturing to an apple issue 2.5GHz (i am unsure of the brand name) It has 222.75gig available. And I am using the decklink extreme card.

    Hi,

Doesn’t sound like a drive issue to me but you can reformat in Disk Utility.

    Best Wishes,

    Mitch

I am at my witts end. I am a pro able to edit schlock into beauty in a single day and I am baffeled. I have a less powerful system at my house and do not have issues. At present I am dubing DVCAM tape with (recently discovered) sketchy inconsistant time code to beta and I will try to capture from the beta deck.

    I am really confused

Our house has experienced this problem continually; and though we haven’t found a fix-all, we found an explanation.

We’re working in FCP HD on dual-deuce G5’s, too; capturing from the Sony Betacam UVW-1800, a variety of DV/S-VHS players, etc, correctly engineered in a rack. Sometimes upon Capture, notification pops up that “You’re running out of hard disk space”; once you’ve finished capturing the selection you desire and attempt to exit the Capture tool, FCP crashes with the ever-coveted Mac Spinning Wheel Of Death.

A glitch, apparently, does not get corrected when the Capture tool measures how much space is in your Capture Scratch folder. Once it assesses how much space is available, it automatically makes a file for that entire file size. Once caught in the clutches of the Spinning Wheel of Death, you wind up having to Force Quit FCP and your capture is, most often if not always, obliterated.

As was recommended before, trash your Prefs, restart, and— most often, just the act of engaging the Capture tool again is enough to set it correct.

Someone in the blackmagic forum suggested turning off the virus scanner (virex in my case) and that seems to have done the trick. I can set entourage to tell me when to scan for viruses. Maybe this will solve your problem as well.

It seems for my system to have gone deeper than just relaunching the capture tool. I got the spinning wheel of death every time I tried to capture. And a couple of times it actually crashed the entire system. Finder and all, I had to do the dreaded power button shutdown technique. Thankfully I didn’t have to actually unplug it from the wall.

Before I posted I trashed the perfs, reset the capture settings, tried capturing from decklink dv and firewire, and decklink 8bit nothing worked. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled FCP, then I reformatted my media drive and still nothing. Then I downloaded FCP rescue, again nothing. I am also now the proud owner of FCP HD the visual quick start guide, handy but not for actually solving this particular problem. I am sure I did other stuff like light candles, pray and burn insense….I wanted to put my fist through my cinema display but that would have gotten me fired considering its the 30in and hella pricey. I even threatened it with going back to AVID…I have one of those in my office as well.

thanks to all for their great suggestions.
