Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy FCP and Fonts

Recently I had to install a font to use in an FCP project. As it is often the case, the font package actually included a number of fonts of different weight, etc. When I opened FCP I could only get to one version of the font plus bold, italic, bold italic. I could work with the different fonts with LiveType, but not with FCP.

From what I understand, FCP chooses one version of the font as the main one and goes with it. The problem is (and that’s only one of them), when we opened the project on a different computer, it chose a different version of the font. I know you can rip out one of the font versions, rename it and use it as a standalone, but that’s a whole new can of worms.

Is there a way to force FCP to recognize the font you need? To choose a font or access the other versions? And why would different computers make different choices?

Which text tool in FCP are you trying? The standard text tools are pretty limited, and don’t work with all font types, Title 3D will though… as long as they are Mac fonts. type 1 or 2 works ok here.

I’m talking about the basic title tools. Title 3D is Boris Plugin, right?

I don’t always have the time or the option not to work with basic title tools, especially if the project migrates from another editor.

I don’t think it’s a problem with not recognizing type, it’s the choice to which FCP defaults to; I understand I cannot make it see all the fonts of the family, but is there a way to force it to default to a chosen one?

The title tools will only work with true type fonts, where the Boris text tools found in the same menu, will also work with PS fonts. All have to be made for Mac. The titles you can do with Title 3D are vector-based. Quite frankly, it’s so much better a tool than the text tools, you should spend the time to learn to use it.
