    Hi, All

I am new to FCP. I am a long time Avid Editor. the question I am asking is if FCP will work with FAT32 format under OSX without any problem ? Because the eSata harddisk have to be mount on a PC system to do color correction in Combustion so we want to use FAT32 in this case.

I am asking this because I found that FCP is a bit slow, many section with 2 or 3 layers of effects have to be rendered before it can playback (I don’t have this problem on Media Composer). Is it normal in FCP ? I can playback a clip with no effects just fine. BTW, We are working on PAL-DV format.

    Thanks a lot.

FCP does not work well with FAT32. It will be slow and you will also be stuck with FAT32’s 4GB file size limit. Use MacOS Extended. Install MacOpener on the PC to read Mac formatted volumes.

Not without problems. There are substantial issues working with a drive in that format, file size limitations and others that make working with it difficult and unreliable. Did you capture to that? That’s usually very problematic.

    All the best,

Format all of your media drives as Mac OS extended. When it’s time to deliver your locked picture to the colorist, export an image sequence to a drive formatted as FAT32.

upon startup, FCP does an analysis of the RT capabilities of the system you are using, and it changes accordingly.

The slowness or lack of realtime capability is a factor of the speed of the hard drive and the hardware of the computer, not FCP software exclusively. There are ways to get multiple layers of realtime layers with 10-bit HDCam using the same software as you have — it is merely a factor of throughput.

In this case, a FAT32 formatted drive would no doubt reduce the realtime capability of the software.

[John Pale] “nstall MacOpener on the PC to read Mac formatted volumes”

I think that program is defunct :). MacDrive from MediaFour is the contemporary program to do this.
