    Hi,

i’m wanting to use a TV to preview my timeline when editing DV (PAL) on FCP5 and when using my Sony DV Walkman GV-1000E the picture on the TV is hopelessly out of synch with the audio coming out of the G5 – there’s a 1 sec or so lag. (When i used to use a DV Storm system on PC the output suffered no lag at all)

I was thinking of buying the canopus ADVC-110 Analog < > Digital Converter for previewing and wondered if this would suffer the same problem? I assume if i set the G5 output audio to go down the firewire and preview from that or the TV audio out, it should be OK? It would be good to show clients work in progress from the timeline on an external TV rather than in a relatively small window on my 24″ Dell monitor!

I was also going to do some old VHS archiving to MPG2 so thats why thinking of getting the ADVC-110 rather than just using the DVdeck.

    Any comments?

    Cheers

    Steve

    as a follow up…

is there an alternative piece of hardware that will offer the same functions as the ADVC-110, but also allow me to preview HDV, or speed up HDV to SD downconversion? I have a Sony Z1 HDVcam and currently only shoot in SD, but planning to use the HDV functions more regularly next year? In fact anything that will do the same job but improve HDV editing in general? Thanks again.

I have the ADVC-110 at home and it works well for DV stuff. As long as your system is set up correctly, there will be no sync drift through the box (it’s one of the only converters at this price range to offer locked audio I think).

If you’re looking for more horse power in a converter, it’ll cost you more but there are definitely options: look at the ads next to this page….all converters practically!

Check out Aja, Promax, Blackmagic, etc, they all make HD solutions
